Fencing stuffs for cowy

I am looking to purchase a beginner's foil set someplace. I have a question about measuring though. For my chest measurement, do I breathe out while taking it? Also, where do you guys suggest is the best place to get a starter kit? I live in Houston, Texas btw.

In no particular order:
There are quite a few threads here already on beginner's equipment and what people recommend. Do a quick search for those threads - I'm too lazy right now to find the links for you. But it is a topic that comes up regularly.

As for measurements - I'd say if anything, breathe in. It's something I've never really thought of before, to be honest. But there are at least two things to keep in mind when sizing. One is how snug you like your jacket (and lame when you get to that point). The other is that sizes - like in all clothes, although it seems more so the case in fencing - vary. When I recently ordered a jacket, I ended up getting one that was two sizes larger than I had figured I needed based on measuring. The original size fit, but was too binding.

Same sort of problem with knickers - I had actually tried on a pair that fit fine. Ordered the same size from a different company, and they didn't fit.

Luckily, most fencing places I've dealt with have been very friendly and helpful. (Although I'm sure people here will have stories otherwise.)

cheers,
Chris

Cowpaste: (gotta love the name!)

If you can wait a bit and use club gear for a few months, the National Championships are in Austin at the end of June. Every major seller of fencing gear in the country will be there with boxes of gear, clothing and shoes.

It really helps to try stuff on. As other have found out, sizes and fits vary wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer.

This way you can get exactly what you want...and if you come later in the event, often the merchants have some good sale prices going (altho some of the most popular items may be sold out...that's the risk you take!)
