Ahh of course spot welding, how silly of me, we had one at my former high school.

Fortunately that won't be necessary as I now have it working (touch wood).

I fully disassembled it again last night, put the spring back in, let it settle, rebuilt all the internals, both ends of the socket (again) etc. and somewhere along the road the issue seems to have been resolved, I still don't know what exactly it was though and that frustrates me...

I tested it on the strip at training tonight for several hours (of continuous and intense fencing) and it's still working fine, I will update if the issue re-occurs...

    Thanks all.

You realize that there's now probably a fencing gremlin somewhere out there who's complaining how one of those vile, viscous armorer-types broke into his peaceful home (inside of a reel) and forced him to flee in fear of his life.

With any luck he'll find a new home in of those ancient Costello masks that keep coming up on e-bay.

This is why experienced armorers always have a few outdated, semi-functioning boxes and basket-case land-mine reels lying around- they're like a RoachMotel for any loose electrical gremlins.

Failing that, the buggers will usually find their way into the nearest late-90s/early-00s VW/Audi product...

I knew there was a reason for keeping that 80's vintage Leon Paul machine and those 70's vintage Prieur reels around.

Of course the buggers appear to skipped over those in favor of a 90's vintage Tripplette machine instead (not that I consider that to be much of a loss).
