    Falling

Hey, I've got a question for all! In Ontario, where I compete when I'm in Canada, falling is no longer penalized as an offence. I believe this is a new CFF (Canadian fencing Federation) rule. Does it still get you a card in the States? Europe?

That change was instituted by the FIE in the 2001 FIE CONGRESS AND 2002 EXTRAORDINARY CONGRESS DECISIONS. The amendments is in the same pkg of rule changes as the 3-minute bout in a pool, rest after 8 hit in DE in SABRE ONLY, etc.

From the British Fencing web site:

    http://www.britishfencing.com/Englis...nge21may02.doc

When I was in Tacoma, WA on 2003/02/01 I saw these rule changes in a US ref's rule book - I'm from Vancouver, BC - so I think the changes is worldwide. Except perhaps Libya... or Liberia... [joke]

    falling down

yes, i received today a new membership report, 2002-2003 Rules Changes, #3, says
"Falling is no longer an offense and consequently is no longer penalized. (it is understood that an offensive action that is launched in such a way that the fencer is not in control, and thereby falls, is disorderly fencing and does require a warning and the annulling of any touch scored.)
[whew!] a difficulty might be in the interpretation of
"LAUNCHED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE FENCER IS NOT IN CONTROL....

yeah, I agree it will be tricky to determine. The way I read it, if you are in control of your fall during an offensive action the point will be good.... which brings up the concept of a controlled fall in general. So if you fleche and hit and land on your stomach... and can smile and say 'touche' immediately afterward...
    "Touch for the attack!"

    Hmmmm....

Isn't it what Pawlowski used to do with his horizontal fleche?
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

A friend of mine (who has trained fairly extensively with the Hungarian national team in epee) will occasionally pull out these beautiful horizontal fleches. He does tend to land flat on his face, but before he lands, it looks picture perfect
