For those who watch the Judge Joe Brown show....tomorrow's broadcast....

I currently have no cable, and according the show's website, my case is up for tomorrow (case #2). My laptop got destroyed back in October and I sued the guy to get a replacement. I just wanna watch him kick his own ### again!

    Thanks!

    YouTubing would be awesome!

Aha, here is my chance to learn whether a conjecture of long standing is correct or not...if there is not some sort of non-disclosure agreement, that is.

On these shows, does the "loser" actually have to pay the judgement himself? I have always figured that the show pays, and that that is one of the incentives used to get 'contestants'. Is that how it's done?

I avoid television, but for you, I may have to make an exception.

Apparently, most of these "Judge XYZ" shows have the producers pay for the judgement and the presence of various people out of a reserve kept for that specific purpose.

From the "Judge Judy" Wikipedia page:

In order to ensure a full audience, the producers of Judge Judy hire extras who compose the entire gallery. Though tickets are not offered for the show, arrangements can sometimes be made with Sheindlin's production staff to allow fans of the show into the audience. Once all the cases are through, all of the audience members receive payment.

    -----
The producers' employees call both parties and ask them questions about their case to make sure it is suitable for Judge Judy. If the parties agree to be on the show and sign a waiver, agreeing that arbitration in Sheindlin's court is final and cannot be pursued elsewhere (unless she dismisses the lawsuit without prejudice), their case will air on Judge Judy.
The award limit on Judge Judy, as on most "syndi-court" shows (and most small claims courts in the U.S.), is $5,000. The award for each judgment is paid by the producers of the show, from a fund reserved for the purpose. About forty percent of the cases are money judgments, while the remaining sixty percent are either dismissed or involve an order for an exchange of property.

    -----

Both the plaintiff and the defendant receive $100 for their appearance as well as $35 a day, paid to them by the show. The litigants' stay lasts for the number of days that the show does taping for that week, which is two or three days. In addition, the airfare (or other means of travel) and hotel expenses of the litigants and their witnesses are covered by the show. If there is an exchange of property, Sheindlin signs an order, and a sheriff or marshal oversees the exchange.
The above excerpt cites, among other things, an interview of Judge Judith Sheindlin by CNN's Larry King from Feb. 18, 2000.

Also of potential interest is the cited PDF document, "Syndi-Court Justice: Judge Judy and Exploitation of Arbitration" (courtesy of the American Bar Association)...

That's about what it was like from the Brown show. All the court TV shows troll small claims cases (or you can submit yourself). I got contacted by both Brown AND Judy...the Judy folks wanted a witness to the actual moving of the table my laptop fell from, but I didn't have one, so they didn't take it (which is good....Judy's scary). The Brown people thought I had a strong enough case, so the took it.

What happens is the producers get the existing court date continued for about a month. That way the case can go to arbitration (which is what these judge shows actually are) and the court itself has a date to use if the arbitration fails.

The participants also get a participation fee. The amount depends on travel. I got about $500 because I live in town and they producers didn't have to pay for my travel or lodging. In fact, the guy I sued made out in the same amount.

The production company DOES pay the judgment (I got my money about 2 weeks after our appearance), but since it was a legitimate court case, I'm guessing it's still showing up on my defendant's record as a court case loss.

I haven't watched one of these shows since I was a kid and my Grammie just loved Judge Wopner's (Wapner?) post-case interviewer...I can't remember his name.

Anyway, it's the commercial break...I'm watching this one. Funny how Brown tried to show his expertise by naming all three weapons...

And I had the good sense to keep my mouth shut!

They actually had me bring one of each weapon down in case they wanted to show them, but elected not to...they spent the whole day at the check in station.

I think by the time you posted I'd said all I would say that day....then I just sat back and let my defendant dig a hole...deeper and deeper!

I was surprised that it didn't take more to establish your burden of proof. At least a witness. But congratulations.

    Nice facility. Have tournaments there?

I think I've seen you at NACs, no?

I'm pretty sure that clown court has no standards for burden of proof...it's entertainment. The results, however, seem to better satisfy our desire for justice better than real life.

It's binding arbitration....but the original case was small claims...and in small claims, if you prove 51% of your case, you win.

As soon as Defendant confirmed he'd moved tables around, I knew he was dead.

Mac a. Bee...I haven't been to a NAC in years, so probably no. As for events....we've held in house tourneys there, but there's not enough room for a SoCal event (although we looked into it)
