Quit (no longer with us)
Array Dune fans? + fencing Anyone here remember Dune, Atrides? My favorite science fiction movie. How much fencing was in the film? What was the name of the little girl nun, and what was her cryptic quote at the end of the movie?

Array First its Atreides. Second they didn't really fence. That had shields (not as in buckler shield....but force field shield)....daggers....nothing like we use at all. Third...the movie sucked a lot. Read the books...much much better. Scifi channel redid the movie also...sucked. Nothing compared to the books. They at least did a better job than the one with Sting in it. For the next answer the sister of Paul was named Alia. Given the name St. Alia of the Knife. And she was a Revered Mother...not a nun thing. And last off I don't know the quote because the movie sucks...watched it once and refuse to ever subject myself to that again. -

Array I think she said:
'For he is the Kwisatz-Haderach' - I know I mis-spelled it. It has been years since I read the book and saw the movie. Paul was the 'God'. -

Array Being a Frank Herbert fan and particularly the Dune books he wrote, it is a shame that the Media Forces couldn't do a better job of representing his work on the screen. The Sci-Fi channel was the better of the two versions.
Having said all that... Dune is the book that got me excited about fencing in the first place "a feint within a feint within a feint" is the line I'll always remember best. The knife fighting in the book was very exciting, particularly when Paul was forced to prove himself in the Freman manner by fighting for real with a knife. Although a better knife fighter than his opponent, he was used to the slowing effect of the personal shields so all the Fremen thought he was toying with his opponent rather than just finishing him off.
We used to "knife fight" ala Dune in welding class at High School. We'd wear our leather welding jackets and use soapstone for the knives. If you marked the other guy with a white stripe, you were the winner. body touches counted 3 and arm touches counted 1. First to 3 won the contest.
Well, now I have to go read Dune again as I haven't read it in over a year.... “General Feraud has made occasional attempts to kill me. That does not give him the right to claim my acquaintance.” -

Array No...they are not nuns. Nuns are not allowd to have sex whereas Revered Mothers are. Plus the training each goes through is totally different. Revered Mother training is totally political. There training is to manipulate...whereas Nuns are taught religious things. 2 rather different fields. Well thats it...enough of being a dune nerd. -

Array whereas reverend mothers are well, that was interesting, i had never known that before, i'll have to buy a dune readers guide book, and check more into it. -
The little girl is Paul's sister, her name is Alia, and her comment to the Baron refers to the fact that he is the father of the lady Jessica ( Paul and Alia's mother ) I would suggest you really should read the book Similar Threads -
