He said that his classmates were getting responses from high-school students, not that he was one. Since he claims to be an engineer, I assumed that meant he was in college at least. Who knows, though?

Even if these questions mean nothing to you they have a purpose. You dont know the product, I do.

Here's an idea! Tell us what the product is and what it is supposed to do, then ask us if we think it would be useful and how much we would be willing to pay for it.

If this survey is for a college class, I see no harm in letting us know what ideas you have in mind. Your survey has eluded to a sabre related design but you could probably get better feedback from telling us a bit more about your proposal. If it has something to do with changing the way the weapon or scoring machine works, you would likely have to deal with the FIE and USFA in order to have the product adopted. That said, you could probably use some help from the fencing community to see fruition.

In his defense, there are many good reasons for not supplying information regarding the research as that could cause participants to skew their survey responses.

Rather than rhetorically trying to convince us of the need for his product he us attempting to quantitatively establish the "need" through a survey.

Of course, his lack of professionalism, diplomacy, and/or salesmanship completely alienated his potential survey group, but that doesn't mean his research design is flawed (although it may in fact be flawed).

The (software) engineers I know are great at spelling but horrible at English grammar.
