    Dyslexia and Magma's comment

Magma said in the Chess Discussion:

"dsylexia is very difficult i really fight reversing my letters, but it comes out somewhere in my misspellings, you have to forgive me! it's all I can do from whatever over this dilema."

I know someone who is a really good fencer who also has dyslexia.
Does dyslexia hurt or help fencing? Any guesses?

it could have an effect, but over time, with continual practice, it wouldn't matter, because fencing responses would become more reflexive.

    Magma,
I was thinking that maybe coming or going it would not matter because you could see the clue from the action whether from a right handed or left handed fencer. It could be an advantage in reaction time perhaps?
Did you have trouble learning to read too?
The different ways people learn always amazes me.

Well I have dyslexia and i haven't noticed it ever hurting or helping my fencing. But then again I have been coping with it since a young child so for me its a occasional issue I deal with. Not bad at all anymore. But I don't believe there is any correlation between dyslexia and how well/bad you fence.

i never thought it affected anything except my spelling, thanks for the input, i really never looked into it, the way some people research their foilbles. it's really not a good idea, just accept the little imperfections that life sends us and make the best of it. for example, we have a 6 fingered man on the board whose avatar is an infant. who am i to trouble this person? considering that i'm well past the stage at wich i should have children, it doens't bother me to read his posts, realizing that he knows me, and would never consider hurting my feelings over this or my spelling for example, would never enter his mind. There are a number of people that i have known over the years, with these sorts of 'imperfections' seeking perfection is a folly, seeking imperfections in others is worse, you'll always find something, and then what will you have? either a collection of imperfect friends [yea!], or a collection of manniquins.

    Magma,
What I was getting at mostly is that MAYBE dyslexia is a secret advantage. It is an advanced integration of what is left and right. It is not being dependent on the norms as in being able to see in any direction. It could be a very good thing...

I haven't ever had letters swirl around when I was reading but sometimes when I'm writing by hand and I'm tired the letters will come out in a jumbled order or reversed without me realizing it, I've heard thats a form of dyslexia. I've also noticed I've never had trouble reading things upside down or backwards which other folks I've known did. I'm glad we're in the computer age and we get to use keyboards for our writing, it solves my minor difficulty quite nicely.

Speaking of Dune...what's aliens have to do with it? I don't remember any aliens in Dune, just people from different planets. Unless you want to call them aliens just because some of them were there illegally....
