All hail Keeth Smart! Smart is now #2 in the world, with just 13 points separating him and Pozdniakov. And his finish at Budapest should demonstrate to many people that his recent successes at Moscow and London are no flukes.

I do believe we're seeing a genuine threat from the US for a medal (gold, even) next summer in Athens. Just hope we don't do something stupid like have a nuclear war or something that takes out half of the greek isles.

Two or three years ago, I would have bet that Ivan Lee would be our first medalist since Westbrook (and I would have put Lee's chances at the 2008 Olympics). Now, I can't think of anyone better than Smart.

The important thing is that he has gained the respect of the European fencers. They fear him. They're the ones shaking in their boots when he comes on the strip, not the other way around. I don't think we've had a fencer like that since Westbrook. Not Bayer, maybe Marsh, not the Zimmermanns, most likely none of our epee fencers, male or female.

So when is Sports Illustrated going to put his face in "Faces In The Crowd"?

    With results like:

    5) USA SMART
    9) RUS POZDNIAKOV
    33) ROM COVALIU

I'd love to see the tableaux for this event!

    Hometown advantage?

Ferjancsik from Hungary wins the Budapest WC.
Charikov from Russia wins the Moscow WC.
    Er, um.... the London WC.

What's the chances Smart will win the Boston WC
    in April (May?)?

At this rate, I don't think there's any problem with Smart winning the next few WCs wherever they are.

    Just a note,
The WC eric mentioned is no longer in boston. It has been moved to NYC. I believe it will be memorial day weekend (it is the same time as the WF world cup that is in NYC)

Or, you know, in June when the schedules say it is.

I'm not sure I'm so sanguine about Smart's further WC and Olympic chances. I don't think he has ever defeated Pozdniakov, Covaliu, or even Tranatino in a DE. At least not that I know of. That's why I wanted to see the tableaux. If Keeth hasn't defeated these guys at least once, if not more than once, then I think it is a pretty tough go. Not because he doesn't have the skill, but because he may not have the confidence. Being at the top of the standings, and being at the top of the standings and you spanked Pozdniakov and Covaliu on the way there are two vastly different things.

    IMHO

I don't question the fact that the Europeans don't respect Smart but I don't think they fear him because of the results he has gained. They fear him because of the unpredictability of his fencing style and basically the traditional Europeans Sabre powerhouses aren't use to it ands find it very awkward!!!!

"To put it mildly the American fencer is not a master of the sword, you never know what he's going to do, what he's preparing for..."

I translated the above from www.nemzetisport.hu, which is what one of the European fencers said before their bout with Smart

Such braggadocio sounds more like the guy's so scared he's pi$$ing in his pants thinking about Smart. If a person isn't scared by another fencer, he wouldn't say such things. He'll say something like, "Yeah, Smart has potential..."
