Array Minnesota hats off to thee What a whirlwind weekend. I get in Friday night to 9 degrees, snowing and slushy. My brother meets me and tells me we have to make a pit stop on the way home, Dad is in the hospital again. Apparently they did not drain him enough from dialysis and it backed up fluid somewhere.
We walk in and I have never seen him so thin. He was laying there with his mouth open, sunken cheeks and he looked a lot like the corpses we used to work on in anatomy. Thankfully he was just asleep. He would fall asleep in the middle of a word. Then we went to see Mom, who can barely see and hear. But it only took her 30 seconds to poke my stomach and make a weight comment.
Saturday morning the food orgy began. I had bagels with a friend I haven’t seen in about 5 years. Lunch was with some friends from one of my profession BB’s and we had a great time. It was great to see them. Then down to the hospital to see Dad and he was 100% better. Dialysis always knocks him for a loop. Then hanging with the family, dinner at my brother’s and telling stories and laughing all night.
Sunday morning was breakfast with an attorney friend of mine and he has a new hobby. He collects old coins, and by old I mean ancient. He gave me a coin that was stamped somewhere between 50-54 AD. We had a great talk about Caesar and Claudius and how they influenced what was stamped.
Finally we head to campus for the game. I stop and buy T-shirts for the boys (I mean what’s important?). At the reception I meet up with a friend of mine from high school who I haven’t seen since 1971. That was cool. They tell us with 6 minutes left in the first half go out and line up by decade. Then they put us in alphabetical order. I end up behind a guy who was a big gun and finished the year before I started. So they announce “Clyde Turner” and there are all sorts of cheers. Then they announce “Darryl Weiss” and you could hear the crickets chirping. Someone had to sit on the bench and keep it from getting cold. I lettered, that’s all that matters. The Gophers won so Tubby didn’t need to call me in. I did get to see the guy I wanted to see. Back then he had the physique I would kill to have. 6’5”, 205 and quick as a cat. He went on to become a dentist. I told him I can’t imagine seeing children in his chair and he has hands the size of a small table. He had a stroke a couple of years ago and you can see the residual affects Then dinner with my brother and my old friend. Way cool.
This morning my brother is late and we go to say goodbye to Mom. (a surprise to me) We take my Dad’s car and go a couple miles and it starts making a funny noise. Rather than take chances we go back and switch cars. Crappy, snowy slushy, icy roads so traffic is crawling. I make it to the airport and make it to my plane as they are completing boarding. Nice change, it is 75 outside. Link to the film my brother shot forthcoming. Great to walk out on the court in front of 14,635 people, even if there were only about 5 who knew me.

Array What was also cool is as I walked to the mustering point (I had on my name tag and years I played) I would get high fived or fist bumped by folks. (even Goldy Gopher) Score 3 strokes, 4 seizures and 2 brain surgeries

Array Congrats, that must've been a rush! Goldy Gopher?? I'm taking a wild guess he's a distant cousin of Bucky Badger. And so what if you weren't one of the famous guys? At one time you were good enough to make the team, and that's something. And you're still active in fencing- it's fun, even if we're not the first draft of the Veterans' Team USA. Sorry to hear your dad's not well. It kinda sucks when you live 2000 miles away. My folks are in Pasadena and I live in Wisconsin. carry on, mate! Enjoy that clear San Diego February air! -

Array Here's a snippet of the video my brother shot. Notice the crowd noise differential between Clyde and me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FzQcRzqmjc
Where in Wisc. do you live? When I was in MN they started the reciprocal in stae tuition between WI and MN. So we spent a lot of weekends in MadTown. It was far enough away that you were away at school and close enough to come home for a weekend. I grew up in Chicago, so I have been to WI from both directions. Score 3 strokes, 4 seizures and 2 brain surgeries
