Array Reels and Spring Resistances Hi:
I have a crazy (probably stupid) idea.
What if you were to make reels that had MORE spring resistance than most reels? Say the current reel offers 1lb of resistance over 60 feet as it stretches out, and you make one with a tighter coil that offers 5lb of resistance over 60 feet as it stretches out.
Would it be physically possible to make reels like this? Also, since we're at it, what are the affects of such training?

Array The effect would probably be a reel which follows you up the strip like a dog at heel. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Physically possible?
Hook up 5 of your 1 lb reels at the same time.
Not elegant, but why? "a braggart, a rogue, a villaine that fights by the book of arithmatick. Why the dev'l came you betweene us?.." -

Array Yes, it is mechanically possible to design and build one; modify an existing reel? Not so much. Given the current designs, you would have to add more springs to the reel or make them wider.
But, again, we ask the question, "Why would you want to do that?" As far as affecting training, no, I don't think it would, as you would grow accustomed to having the extra 'tug'. My major issue is that now when you accidently drop the connector, it will slam into the reel with 5 times the force, which will invariably break the end off. -

Kai There are some youtube videos of resistance training in Italian fencing clubs, using bungee cords. I think that's a better idea than trying to build it into a reel, if you want to try it. But you should probably have someone designing the workout who understands how it's supposed to work and how to do it correctly.

Array As for Bunjie reels, Our club had once attempted to create our own bunjie reel system, but the person ordering the bunjie decided to buy the 'extra strong' bunjie. The results were that on one occasion when I went to do a jump counter attack, the damn thing pulled me off my feet and I did a face plant. After that, I thought that we had put them away for good, but one practice shortly after that when I wasn't at the club, the tape holding the pully assembly onto the floow gave way and the result was a projectile that put a divit into one of our members.

Array Foil fencing is conducted using rules of right of way or priority, which determine which fencer's hit will prevail when both fencers have hit. The basic principle of priority is that the hit of the fencer who begins an offensive action first will prevail over his/her opponent's hit, unless the action of the former fails. -

Thanks all for the feed back. I kind of like Ancinet one's idea for making the attempt, now I need to find a fencing club crazy enough to do it <_< Just remember folks, children in the backseat cause accidents, and accidents in the backseat cause children. -

If you have a 10 foot ceiling and need 60 feet of play, just set up a block and tackle with 3 sheaves (AKA three fold purchase). To get 5 pounds resistance you will have to hang somewhat less than 30 pounds due to friction and the weight of the traveling block itself.
E-B no video of the bungie face-plant?

Answering your question about why doesn't anybody make a reel with a 5lb pull on it...I have. I had some extra industrial ceiling extension cords sitting around. So I stripped them out and made them into a test reel. The result was a reel that would very easily pull a baby across the room or take out somebody's eye if it slips and goes flying back toward the end of the strip.
Though I have to admit, it was pretty gosh-darn-fun to fiddle with it. Similar Threads -
