What to look for in a club?

Hello everyone! I've been wanting to begin fencing for years and am researching clubs to join. I like the idea of strategy, agility, and speed that comes with this sport. When I learn the ropes competition sounds pretty good! Any advice on what questions and/or what to look for in a particular club? I live in between 2 clubs which are both about an hour from my house. Yeah...I know...the convenience factor is gone but I just know this sport is for me and cannot wait any longer!

    Thank you all in advance!

Welcome, iotaboom. You'll love fencing. You might get a bit addicted to it. In a good way.

I recommend scheduling a quick visit to each of the clubs when they have classes/open fencing taking place. Talk to the head coach, ask if the club has introductory group classes (one-time or a series) and if they have private classes. Ask if the club is competitive or recreational (most clubs I know place a good amount of focus on competition). Tell him/her about your interests and they'll tell you if this club offers what you want.

By asking these questions in person, you'll see the club, and get a sense of the place.

Have fun. You will meet and fence with many awesome people.

Make sure and ask if the club requries any long term committment or contract, and if so, ask to see a copy.

If the club provides equipment for classes, wander by the rack. Are the jackets and masks organized? Are they clean and look in good repair?

Watch the coaches interact with people around your age. Some coaches are good with children, some with teens, some with adults. Who'll be teaching you? When you talk to the coach, does he/she let you talk, or do they talk about how great their club is? Do they ask about your interests and show how the club will reflect them?

Talk to some of the students. What do they like about the club? What done't they like? Have they fenced someplace else before this club?

Honest, you'll like fencing, especially if you go to a club whose business it is to HELP you like fencing. You're making a big commitment -- in time, if nothing else -- and you should be a little discriminating.
