| is there really a valentine day competition? i remember a young italian who visited us awhile back who had the same suggestion, he wanted us to fence valentine, but i was unable to get to italy for the match. it was unfortunate. i can see it though:
mango vs valentine - strip 1. the crowd shuffles uncertainly. mango twists up her cord and pops a wire in her foil.
POINT valentine[spelling, i don't know her really]
Mango: yellow card, 10 seconds to get a new weapon
ready? fence............feet move a little bit,
POINT valentine!
Mango: undeterred, goes back en garde, fixes her socks,
director: HALT! yellow card mango, socks not good
point: valentine.......continue FEnce!.....
the crowd begins to nodd appreciation for the match,
Mango trips over a bubble on the strip and her point hits Vanentine on the lower corner of her vest...
the crowd mumurs....
POINT: Mango!!!!
it is now 3-1.
Mango, delighted by her good fortune, seeks the little bubble in the strip in order to do the same thing again.
BRavo! yells a maestro from the back of the room, who sees what mango is trying to do......
Mango smiles silly and goes for it..
FENCE! barks the director
this time valentine is ready......"ahHA! here she comes, the little foilist from 2nd generation italy" parry riposte, misses, counter stop thrust to the chest square on!
Point Mango.
3-2
Ready Fence....
this time they go, back a forth, back and forth, back again, forth again, inviting to sixth, NO WAY< mango does not take the bait, you will have to go for the attack! vanentine attacks to the lower outside of the vest; mango parries prime, steps back and will all the strengh left in her little spagetti arm, brings her arm up, but vanentine sees it, parries four, drops back 1/2 step, lunges but mango sees it, moves back 1/2 step valentine short 1/2 inch, and redoubles again into the chest, mango brings the arm up, but too late, not enough power, POINT valentine,
4-2.
ready, fencers {si]
mango: No! - tap tap.....shoe is loose can i please, pourvefavore
director: no! engarde! ready! fence!
this time valentine doesnt wait not even 1/2 second she goes right into a tremendous lunge from the engarde line anticipating mango's advance attack lunge, however: mango sees it, and does a inquartar-tar moving out of the way and valentine changes it instantly into a fleche attack, skewering the mango and winning 5-2.
the italians clap politely for mango, and slap her on the back for the nice try, while once again, valentine, italy's sweetheart, get the big pizza pie.
That's Amore! |

| I'd probably like Russian ladies over Pacific Islanders, I'm not into the suntanned look, it makes me think of people getting skin cancer. But really I'm not looking a mail order bride, thats a bit too far to go to get a partner for a fencing tourney. |

| i'm horrified, those girls are beautiful, and right about now, they're gettin ready on the big island for the Merri Monarch Hula Competition. you think fencing competitions is difficult, you should see a Hula Compeition. April is the month, so, California, get your tickets ready, that's something you'll never forget, i can do a little hula, but not real good. i get very suntanned by the way, and was out so much in the sun, i got very brown, which i like.
to each his zone. |

| I have lived there for several years. It's totally beautiful, the landscape is fantastic, but they keep building new shopping centers; the best area is the windward side, and of course all of the shorelines, but there are some areas that have become overdeveloped. I moved to the mainland only because of the conflict in the middle east, if we get totally wiped out for example, my sister may drag me to her home, the islands are great, everyone should have the opportunity to visit for at least a month, and grab some sun, and see some stuff. i like volcanos, i met some volcano scientists while i was there, from china [no kidding] who were great. I ran a bit there, I thought I might train for their next marathon, and was up to about 6 miles a day.I'd like to go back, but I can't right now.

| It's true -- Hawaii is beautiful. I got to spend 3-1/2 weeks there back in August of 2001. A friend of my family owns a house (one of many in various locales for her) in Kailua.
Loved the scuba. Loved the beaches. Learned what a man-o-war feels like.
My favorite Hawaii moment happened right at the get-go: my ex-girlfriend and I had arrived the day before, so our body clocks were all off. Since we were up at 4:00am anyway, we thought it would be fun to buy breakfast and take it to the beach to see the sun come up. (I am SO not a morning person, so on the rare occation that I'm up, I enjoy it.) We went to a Safeway to get food and there's a kid stocking shelves. As we walk by, he stands up and says, "Hi there. Can I help you find something?"
He was so genuinely pleasant that I almost fell over. And that was just the beginning. I really believe that the people there are big part of the HI experience.
