Array Site Lag Times hi
F.net has been loading abysmally slow for me. Maybe it's my computer? Maybe its my internet? Well, who knows......
Other sites (facebook, google) load fine, f.net is slow. Skype and ichat work as well.
I am running a mac (I do expect a plathora of PC V. Mac jokes) but while that may or may not be the issue, I'm curious if there are any current known issues causing the slowness of this site.
All help is welcome, thanks
Kai
Edit: For some reason the site speed improved after I posted this......we shall see if this remains so.

Array I wonder if you've been over-using it?
Just kidding...but is there a particular time of day when the slowness is happening? -

Array It's pretty zippy for me. FWIW, I'm on a PC running Ubuntu (sometimes KDE).
I assume you've tried dumping cookies/clearing cache? How long since your last defrag? Disk cleanup utility? Are you connecting at peak times (including peak F.net hours and peak usage for your Internet provider)?

Array Clearing cookies might be a good idea, I haven't done anything and it seems to be running ok now. My isp has had issues but my landlord claims that they were supposed to be resolved last monday.
I'm also tempted to take it to the apple store cause ive had problems with peripheral objects. Just remember folks, children in the backseat cause accidents, and accidents in the backseat cause children. -

A few things that might set you straight... It's cute that your OS still requires defragmentation instead of controlling itself. -

Array Notice I wasn't suggesting how to fix a problem on my OS.

Array OSX doesn't need defragging either ;D
Oh, a note to the OP. If you're using FireFox try getting the LORI extension. You'll get three times in your status bar indicating time to connect, time to first byte and time until page load is complete. That helps track down whether the delay is because your ISP is teh slow, or if the site's dynamic content is taking a long time to render. Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

BTW, Kai, I too have experienced slow downs on fencing.net and I'm pretty convinced it's server side. I've experienced them on both my home iMac, my work PC, and the android G2 in my pocket. 90% of the time fencing.net is great, but every once in a while it freezes up, usually followed by a "server is too busy" page. Every time that's happened, I've just waited 5 minutes and it cleared up. -

Heck my Blackberry loads it just fine (i miss tapatalk), well last night my room mates computer failed too.

What I would want to replace if I switched though, is that when I open a new tabe, the window shows my top twelve sites, and if I click on one it goes to it. Is that feature avaialble on chrome, firefox or opera?
I recall opera did it first, but I don't feel its as good a browser as the others. Just remember folks, children in the backseat cause accidents, and accidents in the backseat cause children. -

Maybe just maybe, I'm wrong. It could be possible (probably not but could) that it's a WebKit issue with the dynamic content. That'd explain why I get the slowdowns on both Mac and PC, since Safari and Chrome are both WebKit browsers. I can chalk the speed changes on my phone up to changes in HSPA+ coverage. The "server too busy" notices I'm pinning on the server, though.
About the top sites... Opera did it first, but Chrome did it before Safari did. Though it's only 8 on Chrome, sadly. It used to be 9, but they changed it from a square to a rectangle. Also, chrome has the option of making your bookmarks bar a header on the new tab page. I love that because I hate the bookmarks bar taking up screen room.

What's an example of a non-webkit browser? Just remember folks, children in the backseat cause accidents, and accidents in the backseat cause children. -

Array Everything else, pretty much. The only other desktop browsers that use it that you might've even heard of are are OmniWeb and Shiira. Also Steam now uses it, if for some reason you're browsing Fencing.net from the in-game browser. The android and nokia symbian browsers are also WebKit. Firefox and Camino are Gecko browsers. Opera uses Presto and IE uses Horse****. -

Array As far as I know Safari doesn't really have plugins or extensions like chrome and firefox. I mostly use firefox because of the utility of things like the web developer toolbar, noscript, adblockplus and other handy add ons. Many of these also exist for chrome, but I don't really like some of the windowing behavior of chrome (sloppy focus inconsistencies and double click title bar to roll up, &c.). I usually use safari on my mac, but my mac is an ancient 1GHz G4 PPC that I mostly use for podcast aggregation and GPS stuff that I haven't bothered to get running via Linux and WINE, so I don't have much recent experience with FdN forums and safari. Array No I wouldn't want a bajillion addons, but you've described two the pique my interest.
Noscript
and LORI
Could you tell me what the first one does? Other than stop all active java scripts from running? Just remember folks, children in the backseat cause accidents, and accidents in the backseat cause children. -

Array Safari now has extensions, but I haven't played with them enough to know how extensive they are. -

A few things that might set you straight... You need to defrag your disk running Ubuntu? I've never defrag'd a disk while running Linux.
The biggest problem I've consistently had with f.net is that around midnite Pacific coast time the server seems to stop for a while. Possibly just maintenance.
