    Wheelchair fencing texts?

    Hi!

Simple question: Is anyone aware of any kind of text which deal with the coaching of wheelchair fencing, to such an extent so that it can be used for a coach who has some experience of coaching standing fencing, but has not studied wheelchair fencing.

If so, is it available online? Can one buy something offline?

That's a good question! I spend a lot (too much?) of my time looking for fencing books, and so far i haven't come across any information that deals with wheelchair fencing.

I don't think it's a well studies sport. Truth be told I don't know anything about it; I would think that it is way more distinct from (olympic) fencing than it seems.

Perhaps you'd like to write one?

You might also try - www.wheelchairfencer.org - that is the the US site for the sport. The athletes and coaches might better know if any kind if text exists or if it doesn't other chair coaches might be willing to talk to you about how to begin coaching someone in a chair. One thing to think about is how are you going to aquire or build a frame. There is, if I recall, information about that on the site. Frames seem to be necessary piece of equipment for the sport.

Also 2 lamé skirts are required and they are expensive. You are talking several square meters.

There is no book / manual / guide that I have found. My wife's first wheelchair competition hopefully will be this October (pending acquisition of a wheelchair). She and I have been piecing things together from hanging out with other wheelchair fencers/parents/coaches and asking lots of questions for the past year.

P.S. www.wheelchairfencer.org never comes up for me - I don't know if it's a Verizon network thing (they are our ISP) or if it's a browser thing (neither Mozilla or IE seems to work) but according to http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/w...hairfencer.org it's "just me"

First thank you TBean. It got me to relook at the Wheelchair website. I found an interesting page there http://www.wheelchairfencer.org/rules-docs.html Not only does it have the rulebooks, specifications on wheelchairs; it also has articles on 'Bladework & Strategy', but also on 'Footwork'. This page may be useful, if you haven't read it already.

I just found out the US website above, does not have the latest rules. You can find them at the International site http://www.iwasf.com/iwasf/index.cfm...fencing/rules/

    "Simple" answer: http://digilander.libero.it/LucaMich...r_fencing.html

Luca Michelini, MD, chairman of IWCFCC, wrote a book "Handicap e Sport" http://digilander.libero.it/LucaMich...p_e_sport.html with I am told a special chapter on fencing. You may try to contact him directly or I can help out if necessary.

From the coaching point of view I can put you in touch with some who do what you are trying to learn (yes they are in Italy and France).

    More specifically...

For general information and text books contact IWAS http://www.iwasf.com/iwasf/index.cfm

Both in Italy and France the Paralympic National Committes in cooperation with the national fencing federations have set up ad hoc courses, curricula, and exams to certify coaches for the various disabilities (para-, tetra-, blind). In Italy there are about twenty such FIS certified coaches. In France there are about thirty certified by the FFE.

if your or anyone else is interested to learn more, PM me.

    Hi!

    Thanks for all the tips!

My club has a frame, we are the only club in Sweden that does wheelchair fencing. My hometown has several schools catering to those with locomotion issues, students from them have been fencing with us for just under a year. Another guy is the coach for that group, but I have been tasked with the job to find everything useful about wheelchair fencing on the net.

    Have a nice time!
