The power of F.Net is pretty awesome...

So.... I went to vote on the new old logo (or is it the old new logo?) and those are some pretty subtle updates!

They not only changed it back, but individually responded to a wall post I made on US Fencing's facebook page. That was pretty nice of them.

Of the three options, I like the original the best. The mask is wrong with #2 and #3, and his elbow appears to be broken as well. Option 1 looks great as it is; why fix what isn't broken?

Regardless, any of the three is a huge improvement.

Posted the article here once I had final confirmation of the sunk cost (not as bad as was alleged): http://www.fencing.net/3331/usa-fenc...-is-new-again/

Note it's USA fencing, not USFA. That's not a subtle change. Unless we're being forced to do that, I think we should not. If we are, we should change the name of the organization. It's a big branding mistake to confuse names of the organization, and by having the organization be USFA and the logo be USA Fencing, we create confusion.

I rather liked 3, which I thought reproduces better in all but the very best printing technology.

I voted for #1 and left the following as a comment:

If we are going to change the weapon from saber to foil/epee (and obviously we need to do that), perhaps we also need to change the aiming of the weapon to be lees toward the sky above the opponent, and more towards the target area? Overall I have always liked the original logo. It is dynamic and shows some of the power and grace of the sport.

Note that (IIRC) the weapon changed from saber to foil a long time ago.

    That said...
WOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!! They ditched that amateurish, lame, middle-school-art-class-looking "new" logo!

Ir's USA Fencing now, to comply with the wishes of the Olympic committee, as I understand it.

It actually sounds like $24,600. $9600 just on the logo, and then $15000 on the materials (but I'm not sure if they're scrapping the materials or not, so if they use them then it's not really a sunk cost).

Why don't they get a fencer to design a logo? There must be people in the fencing community who either own or work for corporate design/identity firms, and they'll probably be better equipped to understand what the sport is about.

I liked option #2, though I agree the mask is a bit wonky. Mainly I liked the font chosen for the word FENCING and the way the stripes of the flag run up the fencer's back. What I don't like about the old one is the odd, sort of pinkish color of the fencer. The bold red and graceful lines of the other two look more professional to me.

I like #3 just fine. The figure looks a bit more streamlined, the fonts between USA and FENCING match (I'd prefer no italics though), the colors are ok, the fencer looks like he's holding an epee.
