The Ice padding uses a material (Transpor) that wicks moisture into the pad, and the pads are smaller and cover less of the forehead and sides of the head. Given your concerns, it's probably worth the $20, although you could replace standard padding with the Ice version later if you wish - for $40.
Have a look at the replacement padding on their Fencing Masks / Spares and Accessories page.

For the price, I would go for the ICE padding. Seriously, you're already spending a small fortune already... I know what you're thinking "Do I want this mask to be EVEN more expensive? Are there any corners I can cut to reduce the price?" I felt the same way, but got the padding and was glad I did. I think the ICE padding plays a key role in making the mask cooler and more comfortable.

You got me there . I'm going to try and purchase it this month. I may do this either directly from LP or Absolute Fencing. Thanks!
EDIT: What I could do is buy the X-Change mask from Absolute Fencing because I have a discount coupon from my club to take advantage of and then order the ICE padding from Leon Paul after to upgrade to.
That might not be a bad idea. Even if I order the X-Change mask from Absolute Fencing, I'm sure I will experience the difference between my old AF mask and the new one.
