Want to win a chance to fence olympic champions on tv at fencing masters nyc?

    Dear Fencing Clubs,

Have your club represented at Fencing Masters NYC and your fencers can win a chance to fence Olympic Champions Aldo Montano or Nicholas Lopez!

Here's how it works: (and we could really use your support!)

As a local tournament organizer, you'd designate a local event a Fencing Masters qualifying event (In Sept and OCT), and charge an extra $40 per person. For this $40, entrants get:

    * a ticket to the Fencing Masters NYC A tournament with top fencers in men's saber (Montano, Lopez,
    * the top 8 of this qualifying event get a NY FM t-shirt
    * the winner of this qualifier gets to fence in the Club Champion's Tournament on Nov. 17, in New York during the Expo leading up to the round of 8 finals for the FM NY
(Competitors in the 8: Montano, Lopez, Marti, O'connell, Homer, Morehouse, Igoe and THE QUALIFIER)
    * supporting clubs are listed on the FMNYC web site and can have a booth at the FMNYC event
    * local winners will also be recognized on stage and on television at the event

The FMNY is looking to donate close to 25grand to TEAM USA Olympic hopefuls pending our ability to raise the money with ticket sales and donations! List of supported athletes will be posted in the near future on our website when it launches.

The FM NY will be held at the Hammerstein Ballroom (2,000 spectators) on Nov. 17th and we're looking to air it on national television on Versus. We already have an offer to air it pending our ability to fund TV Production costs. This tournament is a promotional event for fencing where we will also look to help support our US Olympic Team.

We need your help and my goal is that this event will be the start of taking fencing to a new place!

    Tim

Sounds fun. Good luck. Just goes to show what top fencers in the US have to do to get funding. I mean, don't get me wrong or anything, sounds like a great plan but I just think its a bit sad that one of the top fencers in the country can't just only fence and compete (hard enough already) but must be a sort of public relations/promoter just to get some cash, so they can do the circuit, get the points and put a team in the Olympics for our great nation.

How about this, I'll send you 40 bucks and you convince Yury to designate more competitions (ROC) to count for team points and get back the one we lost (April NAC). Why'll you're at it, I'll even send you another 40 if you can get Madrid off the designated list (joking). Hell, for that last one I'll send you 400 bucks but that's another story.

The point is that although elite fencing and all its concerns are an attractive way to raise money for TEAM USA and promote fencing, what'll get me spending my money is giving me more chances to compete, beat you, earn points and get on the team myself (as remote as that possibility may seem to you, it needs to atleast exist!). If I don't have the chance to even fence with you or get on the points list (due to less competitions) then why should I care about seeing Montano fence you or Homer live? We got youtube.

Actually, if one of your locals clubs signs on and creates a local qualifying competition and you do well at it... you just might have the opportunity to fence Tim.

The competition is mid-week right before the Junior NAC. I don't expect too many folks to travel to it from outside the immediate area (work/school/etc.).

Yes, might be tough for people that are far away....

I'm hoping we can create a replicatable model to grow over time and also do it at different places/different times. Finding date was hard with Worlds right before and thanksgiving coming up and NAC. etc. HOPE YOU CAN JOIN US NONETHELESS!

    Thanks for all the comments!

Do you have a link to donate for the production costs and get it on TV? How much are you looking at to make this possible?

We will have an initial website up next week and a full website with all the details up shortly afterwards on how to buy tickets, make donations etc.

We're currently negotiating with several TV production companies. TV Production is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-40k. We will have tickets that are affordable for the general public $25 dollars as well as VIP seats and tables which include dinner/drinks and a private reception with the athletes and celebrities who attend. More to come! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!

Does the QUALIFIER get some advantage or is he basically gauranteed to finish 8th? I think you should let him win - like Rocky, except with no draw, no Apollo Creed and no Adrian. (I guess Montano could be Apollo Creed cause he is all blinged out and could trash talk the QUALIFIER.)
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WON'T YOU BUY MY TACTICAL WHEEL!!!????

It's a sure thing he'll finish no lower than 8th!

He could win the tournament out of that position...no guarantee to lose at all!

I've been told by people whose opinions I respect that this is a good idea but being done the wrong way... how could I resist becoming involved?

Feel free to shoot me a line. We already have 10+ clubs committed to running qualifiers. I think 4 are up on ASKFRED now. As we do this again, we will certainly learn and improve upon what we are doing, but I'm always open to hearing good ideas or our thoughts!

What's the proposed format? A mixed competition? Separate men's and women's events? It doesn't look as though there are equal numbers. Or are competitors still being lined up?

Look under schedule. Straight DE from 8 for the men, with the women's bout right before the gold medal bout for the men.
