It certainly makes a difference by what Anne means by a decrepit Sabre mask. No
one advises anyone to overlook deteriorated mesh. but that is what mask punches
are for.
If it is just deteriorated Lame fabric, then by all means get it fixed up. I
have replaced the Lame twice on my 1990 Allstar FIE mask and I have no
reservations about it being safe at all. I use it 2 or 3 times a week but I do
take great pains to open my fencing bag and let everything dry out between
uses.
What I would really like to ring alarm bells about is some of the inexpensive
masks that have a bib consisting of only Lame fabric, foam, and interior fabric
layer. When such a mask gets a hole in the Lame fabric it MUST be taken out of
service. Take a mask punch or even a pencil, poke it through the hole and feel
the point on the inside.
