Just curious... if you, the reader, were to be named the executive director, what would be the first 5 major policy actions you would take. Assume that the organization is still behind the financial eight-ball, so financial resources are limited, at best...
To answer my own question:
1) look to replace the travel deal with an online vendor (Kurt had started in this direction and I'd finish it quickly).
2) Look to develop a national training center, probably in New Jersey, Delaware or Eastern Pennsylvania near large numbers of corporate headquarters.
3) Develop standard marketing materials for clubs and the ROC (this is in process) that they could leverage. Use the same theme in an airline magazine advertisement for two months a year.
4) Use the Div II/III/Vet NAC to experiment with tournament formats, official hiring and venue alternatives.
5) Be a visible attendee at all NACs and several ROCs and hold face-to-face town hall meetings at each event.
I will be interested to see the position description when it's posted. I think the job has a relatively limited scope, and that some of what you suggest would only be possible if the Board instigated it.

I would refrain from entering into contracts that ignore Board resolutions on their size and scope.
I would consult with my expert advisory panels before making major decisions and usually not override their considered recommendations.
I would have our counsel review all contracts before we signed them if major and let him see them in general.
depends entirely on what power an ED actually has. there are tons of things that could/should get done.
I would start by giving the contract to the FRED people for all tournament signup and membership renewal/enrollment management.

I agree. Either that or at least have a way for ratings on FRED to be confirmed with official ratings on the USFA website... that'd be cool.

I would nationalize the entire program so that ONLY licensed, certified coaches could coach at nationally subsidized salles. Only
Nationally subsidized salles would in turn, sub-contract lessons out to lesser qualified coaches. That way there would be a definite hierarchy. Salles would be large, multicoach facilities managed by non parents.
The USFA would hire a professional fundraising team with real phone skills to get people to donate. Poorer fencers could help fundraise to gain coaching subsidy. January thru April would be a great time to call and raise funds. Also, they would hire professional not for profit liaisons to establish relationships with corporations to sponsor events.
