#1 | | Guest | World Vet Champion Just to let everyone here know that Bill Hall ("fencerbill" on this
newsgroup) just won the World Vet Sabre Championship. Way to go Bill!
Along with being an excellent fencer, Bill is also a very warm and decent
human being. Well deserved congratulations. | |

#6 | | Guest | Re: World Vet Champion Congrats to Bill! It was tight and tense but Bill prevailed. Even
the enxt day, he looked as if he could float several inches above the
ground whenever he felt like it. Three North Americans in the top
four of the 60+ sabre (Goering, Fine, and Hall), two of those US
citizens and one of 'em (Marvin Fine) Canadian by nationality but a
New York resident so he counts twice <g>.
Next day, the men's 50-59 sabre semifinals were all US--Jacobson &
Yung tied for third, Reilly second, and Korfanty first.

#7 | | Guest | Re: World Vet Champion Thanks.
The REALLY big news is that the Americans swept the 50-59 Sabre.
Ed Korfanty beat Wang Yung in one Semi-final and Phil Reilly beat David
Jacobson 10-9 in the other Semi Final.
Then Ed Korfanty beat Phil Reilly 10-5 for the Gold.
Solid Red, White and Blue on the medal stand. And Sada Jacobson got to stand on
the sideline and cheer her father on, turnabout is fair play.
In the 60 Plus Sabre, I finally beat Bill Goering for the first time ever,
10-9, in one Semi-final and Marvin Fine from Albany, fencing for Canada, beat
Wolf Nettingsmeyer from Germany 10-9 in the other Semi-final. I finally
prevailed 10-9 over Marvin in the Final.
So that made 3 out of 4 on the medal stand from North America and 7 out of 8
from the two Sabre events.
Yvonne Walton, mother of Kerry and Forrest from Notre Dame, finished 3rd in the
Ladies 50-59 Foil.
Bob Cochrane from Florida took a Silver in Mens 50-59 Epee. So 9 North American
medals and two Star Spangled Banners.
Will try to have more results on in a day or so after I catch up here at home.

Delia was too shy to mention that she won the Ladies Demonstration Sabre over
Jeannette Strumillo, USA, while Doty Nicolau, USA, and Fiona Wilson, GBR, were
third. So that actually made 10 out of 12 Sabre medals for North America.
In honor of Ruby Watson, trophies were presented to the winner and to the
highest placed over-50 competitor.
The peace of mind and performance of the USA team were enormously enhanced by
the long hours and efforts of Bill Murphy. I personally had the benefit of him
refitting a broken Sabre blade during the pools. One can learn to get spoiled
by that kind of support.

#12 | | Guest | Re: World Vet Champion I ain't too modest to point out that the trophies were actually
presented to the winner and the *second* highest over-50
competitor--we had TWO gen-u-wine international Veteran age
competitors in the top 4 of the WS--I'm 51. I was really thrilled
about that because it made us look more credible for possible
consideration in future Veteran Worlds. It did make for a dithery
moment on the medal stand while Ralph Zimmerman tried to decide how to
award a trophy everybody assumed would go to someone who hadn't won.
I was misty-eyed about the trophies. That was a really beautiful
moment and I liked being reminded of Ruby. She would have been very
pleased (and she would have been competing, too).
Congratulations, Bill - and hope you win at the upcoming Veterans
Challenge, too!
