    Fencing in Brussels?

    Hey there,

I'm moving to Brussels in a couple of days and now look for a fencing club in the area. I've found a list already and now wonder if anyone has experience training in one of them.

I would classify myself as something of an advanced beginner: I've fenced intensely during the last year of my college course and irregularly during the six years since, depending on the opportunities in the places I lived. I started off with foil, ended in epee but would be fine with any if I like the club.

So I'm looking for a place that also offers technical training instead of pure bouting all the time. And, being near 30 I'm happy to train with teenagers but, well - not only

So, any recommendations? Oh, and thanks in advance!

I assume you are talking about this list.
I know Grand Harmonie, Damocles, and Maison Escrime have several epeeists that compete regularly in senior events, although you should note that many coaches and fencers there only speak French (especially Maison Escrime). If you don't, you may want to consider looking into nearby Flemish clubs as well, as English fluency tends to be much higher in the north part of the country.

Handy. I will probably be visiting my mom in Brussels over the summer.

When I was living in Leuven, very near Brussels, I fenced at Parcival. There were very nice people and most of them spoke English. The club was at the Catholieke Universiteit van Leuven. I think they´re still there. One of my friends there, now a prevot, started a new club, but I think it is too far from Brussels. The only bad thing I remember from Belgium was the weather (and the taxes, they are rellay high). I love that country, and flemish people are great. I wish you a nice time there.

Thanks for your ideas! I guess I'll actually bite the bullet and join a French-speaking club - have to improve on my French anyway And yes, Brussels is so nice... Already look forward to my first cherry beer some warm evening in spring.

Jean Claude Van Damme is known as the Muscles from Brussels.

Yes, we're still fencing in Leuven. Pretty much everyone except the maitre speaks fluent English, including the kids. The weather is still bad, taxes are high, but the at least the location makes it easy to get to tournaments in the neighboring countries.
