Array Definition of a "Large Cant" Just a quick question to all those of you who consider your weapon's cant "large" ...how do you define large? I read/hear this especially from epee fencers (and usually from those who pommel), but haven't been able to quantify what "large" means. Are we talking 5+ degrees, 10+ degrees, more?
And as a side note, where are you measuring this from? I usually assume it is, how many degrees more than 180 (a straight tang)... but I am willing to say I am probably wrong. 'Alas sir, I cannot fence.'

its arbitrary. i think that "large" is the couple of degrees right before it fails the tube test. different setups will produce a different exact degree that produces failure. -

Array Is it just me, or is it usually Gav who gets threads way off topic? 'Alas sir, I cannot fence.'

Array Large to me is as much as legally possible (to where the grip is not going outside the guard).

Array According to Tom Arnold, Roseanne Barr has a pretty large one. Edit: Nevermind, I misread the title.

R- Do you have a reference that says the grip going outside the guard is not legal?
You can have a guard that is as large as the inside diameter of the gabaret test apparatus. And the weapon must go through the test apparatus with the blade parallel to the axis of the test cylinder.
But if the guard diameter is smaller than the maximum allowed, the weapon can go through parallel to the axis while the grip does extend beyond the guard. Whoopee! My avatar is back. -

Array how I know I'm tired: I read the thread title as 'Definition of a Large ... ' something else, and wondered why it was in the Armory section instead of the Water Cooler/Game Threads forum, haha.

In Foil, you will find several different sizes of guards. And for those who choose smaller than the max, the grip can exceed what I call the shadow of the guard.
But I agree, unlikely to be a preference for smaller than max size for Epee. Whoopee! My avatar is back. Similar Threads -
