The same is true for (ice) hockey here, which is prohibitively more expensive than fencing.
(i.e. a father of five once told me that he spends more to have one son play REC-league hockey than to have his three other sons fence competitively) Grammar: it's the difference between knowing your sh*t, and knowing you're sh*t! -

R- Lol, I don't know...
His 5th is a girl, and I believe she is involved in high school sports, but you have to remember that fencing (at least in Ottawa) is significantly cheaper than in the US.
(i.e. $900/full year for a competitive membership, fencing 3 times a week including 1 individual lesson /2 weeks. Private lessons run at about $30/30 minutes. Even provincially-sanctioned tournament fees are only about $30/event if you register early). It really only starts to get expensive when you factor in travel/accommodations to nationals, NACs etc., which in my mind is probably the same for any competitor at that level.
Honestly, it's a steal when you factor in the very high level of coaching (national), and to be frank, the cost/benefit ratio was one reason why we supported our son's choice (besides all the social/academic/fitness reasons)
In comparison, you can't even buy a decent set of hockey equipment for $900. Grammar: it's the difference between knowing your sh*t, and knowing you're sh*t! -
