It happened today: 1 million bouts

Ok, really it was last sunday, but who's counting?

Thanks to Fencing Time and all the fencers and tournament organizers out there who use FRED and Fencing Time, FRED now has more than 1 million bouts in the database. Youth bouts, vet bouts, locals, regionals, ROCs, team matches, all kinds.

    Next stop: 2 million.

The only thing more astonishing than this is the amount of work that you've done to make AskFred an integral part of the Fencing Community.

    Thanks, Peet!

we definitely couldn't make it without you, and thanks for all the support. you always respond to what probably seems a minor issue to you but a major one for us as we strive to improve our tournaments.

Is the bout database available for people who are interested in calculating statistics?

    Not currently.

That's a question I get now & then, and it's a good one. It's wrapped up a bit in privacy concerns, but I'll bet i could de-identify the data to address that.

I just haven't put a lot of time/thought to it yet, to be honest.

i'd point out the fact that you could pretty safely make available the same data displayed on the website, because it isn't anything different than a scraper could pull together

It was a bout in the second round of pools of the "Trend Micro Invitational held by Swords" between Tigran Shaginian and John Poremski, which Tigran won 5-3:

You and I know that, but try telling that to the people who get freaked out by these kind of things.

    LOL, I guess so.

And a bargain at that! I'm damn sure I've paid more than that per bout going to most NACs. Heck, more than that per touch, I'd guess.

    Peet,

I tried to answer this question for you. Using the data from NAC B this past year (which, to be fair was a Junior/Cadet/Y14, so you couldn't fence it), the cost per bout was between $18 and $35.

The range results depending on the assumption one makes in how many unique fencers there are. If you assume that no one fences more than one event, you end up with $30-$35 per bout (depending on the size of your event). If you took the other extreme (which I approximated by saying there was NO registration fee), you end up with between $18-20.

    {Calculations available on request. I simply looked at the number of entrants for all events, assumed pools of 6 or 7, assumed BC would choose fewest number of pools instead of most number of pools, and added up the number of bouts per event. Revenue per event divided by number of bouts per event.}

So, somewhere between 6-10 x more expensive.

Hope you can sleep tonight knowing that,

    OJ

how about you change the site's TOS a little bit to make scraping technically "allowed", then, instead?

Hey, there's a thought. Pricing NACs at a piece rate!
