| Help Me!! Somebody who goes by "TEntreri" on AOL's Instant Messenger just started harrassing my girlfriend and I online, including threatening to rape her. He knows our real names. I want to track him down. Anybody know any ways to track an AIM name, or get its IP address, or anything like that? Attached is the conversation he had with me.
THIS COVERSATION IS RATED R AT LEAST. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH.

| Isn't there a way to keep warning them until it totally ignores them? If youw ant to go about it thatw ay.
There could be a 'report user' button or something. If it's not on the im itself it might be on their web-site. I havwn't had the need to look for it so I couldn't tell you.
You could contact the site, and askt hem what you should/can do or just complain to them.
There is a possibility your local police force might know of a way to handle it as well.
Other then that I don't know what to tell ya. Good Luck!

| Turn it in to the police. They don't take kindly to threats and stalking. |

| I'm not sure if it will help, but I had the subject come up a few years back on an internet chat thing I was on. Basically what happened was there was someone who was a stalker, he was actually insane and was on a few pych meds (I think he was something schizophrenic with violent mood swings and other such fun things going on), and had this pattern. What he'd do is tell women sniveling woe is me stories until they'd give him their phone number or info apparently in the delusional idea that they'd be nice and comfort him or help him out somehow, and once he had it he'd turn psycho on them, threatening to kill them, screaming obsceneties, following them around the whole stalking bit. (This was before callerid and the stalking laws over in our state btw).
Well, one day a lady told me the story about what he was doing to her, and it ticked me off so I offered to help her solve the problem. I told her to ignore how crazy he got, and just flirt with him till he told her his info. It took a little while and she was pretty brave to do it, but eventually the guy fell for it.
After I had his home address, telephone number, real name, etc, I then spent some time figuring out all the different channels the guy was on. I then just went to each one, and gave his info to everyone I could find who he had ticked off or harassed.
It turned there were quite a lot of folks in that category who were really angry about the continuing harassment, and many of the ladies had boyfriends eager to do some *** kicking. One of the ladies he had decided to stalk was a professional wrestler with GLOW, even. It got so ugly and violent for him after that the fellow fled to Wisconsin from Michigan, and had to change his name after leaving me numerous death threats about one day coming back cutting my throat and killing my family. Also he had the nerve to accuse me of stalking him if you can believe it.
Anyways, the lady was greatful for my help, it sorted the whole thing out pretty well as I see it, and its been a few years since I saw the guy. Good riddance.

| Way to track him down... The best way to do it, is to start chatting with them, and get them to direct connect...once they are connected, you can go to the dos prompt and type "netstat -a -n" and it will tell you every ip connected to your computer. You will have to sort out which one is his. There will be several IP's connected to your box. Also he has been on for about 7 hours so odds are he has DSL or Cable modem. Then you can do a "tracert" then the ip to sort out all the IP's to track him down. Also don't put the ""'s when your typing in the dos prompt. Hope that helps ya some. |

| Direct connect - now there's an idea. Mike, I'd thought of your idea, and tried to get him talking. Unfortunately, he didn't go for it. I'll try getting some new names and get him talking again, then go for the direct connect idea, and use it with NeoTrace (program that couples the tracert command with real-world maps). That'll give me his home address.
Thanks a lot, everybody! I'm not really concerned about him being serious (and if he is my girlfriend and I are both armed), but I do want to nail this *******. Thanks again!!

| Every situation can be made light of; many times they need it just so we can survive. In any case, I'll get the bastard.

| Whatever floats your boat, but I'd still advise calling the cops and reporting him to the isp--if that can be done-- and let them get the ******. I can understand why you would be very angry about this--I do not take threats or insults to my friends and family lightly either--, but it would probably be safer both physically and legally, to let the proper authorities handle it.
If you try to handle it yourself you may take it too far in the heat of the moment, or if he really is as unhinged as he seems you may provoke him more. Anyway, just my $0.02 worth.

But if you can get a handle on where to locate him I'd pass that on to the cops as well, together with all the networking information as more evidence.

| Swords As much as you want to get this guy, I'd go to the police.
On the odd chance you get the wrong IP address and info, or if he feeds you fake information- you could get yourself in a lot of trouble acting on it.
A lot of police departments have people who handle this sort of thing nowadays. Let them log on as you and track him down.

| ok...first of all...I don't want to know why Lady Cristina has info on stuff like this. So help anyone if they try to mess with her while I'm alive...
That said, I also must agree with Catlady (& of all things, our dear Latenight!). They WANT you to respond. They WANT to engage you. The single best thing is to not respond, & to report it to your local police, who can handle the situation from there.
Sick bastards out there. Yeah, I actually used that word!

| A little help for your internet battle...
From MSN....
Thinking you are anonymous. If you are sending nasty missives, you might think no one will be able to figure out that the e-mail came from you. After all, you set up a phony Web address. Think again. E-mail contains invisible information about the sender.
That information is in the header. All major e-mail programs can display header information. Here's how:
In Microsoft Outlook, double click the e-mail. Then click View > Options.
In Microsoft Outlook Express, click the e-mail. Then click File > Properties and select the Details tab.
In Eudora, double click the message. Then click the Blah Blah button.
In Netscape, click the message to open it. Then click View > Message Source to display the header.
The sender's revealing information is in the sections that begin with "Received:." There may be several of these, depending on the number of computers the e-mail traversed. The originating computer is in the bottom "Received:."
That section will have an Internet Protocol (IP) number, such as 124.213.45.11. It can be traced on a number of Web sites. I use InterNIC. The number is probably assigned to the sender's Internet service provider, rather than the sender. But the ISP will be able to identify the sender using that number. Remember the header if you're tempted to send an anonymous e-mail. You may be less anonymous than you think. Quote:
