    Fencers Club Summer Camp

Sorry. Would have posted this in the Tournaments/Camps area, but the posts there often don't get replied to.

I'm thinking about sending my son to the Summer Camp that Fencers Club of NYC has up in the Berkshires: http://www.fencersclub.com/slides/Su...Flyer_2010.pdf

Did anyone have any feedback about this camp from last summer?

Don't know much about last year's, but I would expect it to be a very high quality camp.

We're leaning towards Fencer Club's camp for a couple reasons, but are also considering Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, Brown or Penn State. If anyone has any feedback/opinions on these, I'd love to hear it.

I can only speak to the Brown camp, though I went many years ago. But I cannot imagine the Brown camp being the same quality in terms of fencers or coaches as the FC camp.

For which weapon? I would think FC's would be hard to beat.

My daughter (sabre) did both (caveat: many years ago). She enjoyed both and got a lot out of both. A word of caution: FC separates students pretty stringently by level. (I am not saying this does not make 100% sense...simply reporting what happens -- or happened.) If your son is not a high level fencer, he might be disappointed (ie. he might not be fencing with 'those' fencers the web advertises). In a way, there is not one "FC Camp," but several -- happening at the same time and location. The first year my daughter did the camp, I remember another girl from her club left early -- and in tears, feeling that her level had been totally under-estimated and that she was not getting anything out of it (I would not have agreed).

The Brown camp has the advantage of being at Brown. Again, depending on your son's age/level, etc., that location is hard to beat.

My daughter also did the U.Penn camp. She did it the same summer as the Brown camp and liked the Brown camp a lot better (less talking, less videos -- more fencing). However, like I said, this was years ago. For all I know, these camps are totally different now.

Well, FC is calling this the "2nd Annual ...". Maybe meaning at the Berkshire School? I like the timing of this mid/late August camp because I would think it would better prepare him for the new season than a late July camp would. The only second-hand feedback that I heard was about one fencer who was there last summer and that he didn't want to go back this summer and I am trying to figure out why since the coaches, facility and everything else about it seems great.

My son is 13 yrs old and just got his E this year, so I'm wondering if the FC camp would be a good fit for him or if somewhere else might be better?

    Thanks for the feedback thusfar....

Manhattan Fencing Club had a great camp over Christmas. My daughter had a great time and used it for a tune up for the coming college season. It is all saber, lots of good people there for fencing.
They usually have a summer camp too.

The current FC camp is not the Kutcher's Camp of old which several of the posts seemed to be describing.

The current FC camp, has many of the same coaches for foil and epee, and occurs in the same time frame, as the old kutchers camp. For Sabre you might want to consider the MFC camp, which is held at MFC during the same time.

MFC would obviously be tremendous, but I can't commute my son into the city everyday. We're doing a local/day fencing camp in July and will probably end up trying the Fencers Club overnight camp in August. Thanks to everyone for your input.

I didn't go to the winter camp, but I was taking pictures of the end tournament for my school. Now I take classes at MFC, and the instruction is great. I would love to be able to go to one of the summer camps there.
