It just seems kinda bad form to me to post up on a public forum first when, obviously, the company will take care of it (and quickly even) if you just let them know what's going on.
I might be reading into things, but perhaps the OP didn't contact LP because they did not think they were entitled to any kind of refund or replacement because they purchased the equipment quite sometime ago, and have used it some. As he also said, he went to the web-site and they are no longer carrying the item - again this would not encourage someone to contact them for help.
So really he was asking - is this thing just junk and I should toss it or how can I replace the battery and get some of money's worth out of it. This question was asked in the sub-forum that deals with equipment issues, on a fencing site. Not unreasonable and doesn't seem like they are fishing for a freebie.
