Array The difference is how quickly you need to say it. You can also call it gaffer tape if you so desire. As for the width.. do you need 2" or 1"? What are you using it for? If you're taping cables I'd probably go for 2", but it really depends on your needs. -

Array 1" is quite sufficient for a foil blade (Don Clinton prefers 3/4")...2" tape is overkill.
I use and sell Permacell...$10 for 180 feet....those rolls last ME a long time!
As advice....when applying it, don't "barber pole" it....having to unwind the entire length to get to the screws or tighten the barrel is a lot of work. -

EDIT: Ahhh tip tape. My perspective as an epeeist who does video production did not compute that use. I always assumed that they used something else for that...

Array In answer to the original question. Gaff is a brand, Gaffer is a type of tape.
It is like Kleenex and Tissue.
As has been discussed the different widths are for different uses.
Anything less than 2" is usually called Camera tape. When you use the term Gaffer tape it usually indicates you want tape for pistes.
As Sam said, I prefer 3/4", which is approximately 19mm. This is the width you will get from most fencer suppliers, especially the European. It is the correct width for going around 5 sides of a Foil blade. Twice over the wire side.
Some go with 1", because it is easier to work with if you are not extremely careful.
For marking strips, I prefer 2" paper tape. Better for Gym floors.
For putting down copper piste, I usually go with the 3" gaffers tape.
A good camera store should have Camera tape. Donald Hollis Clinton, Jr. DHCJr@juno.com
