| Maraging Blades Here's a question from a beginning Saberist (me):
What exactly is a maraging blade. I'm told they are much more durable than anything else out there.
How do they handle weight and flex-wise?
Is it worth it to get a maraging blade over a regular (steel I'm guessing...) one, simply for durability (I won't really be competing any time soon)?
Thnx for any info. |

| Maraging steel is a type of high nickel-content steel, which has high strength limits and is resistant to fatigue. The FIE requires blades homologated for use in international 'A' level competitions to be made of maraging steel (or other types of steel which has been verified as equivalent). Maraging foil and epee blades do last much longer than carbon steel blades, and the greater durability will more than make up for the higher purchase price. Most manufacturers make their maraging and non-maraging blades to have similar flex and balance characteristics.
The situation is different with sabre, though. While a few manufacturers make maraging sabre blades, there is no FIE homologation or requirement for them (vendors who refer to maraging sabre blades as "FIE sabre blades" are technically incorrect). Sabre blades are normally subject to different kinds of stresses than foil or epee blades (sharp lateral blows, rather than flexing due to a thrust), and the general opinion among sabrists has been that maraging sabre blades are not really worth the price.

| As mentioned above that's true for foil/epee. It has NOT been found to be true for sabre blades. Maraging is stupid for sabre blades, it's just a waste of money.
