Nope, not quite. Tim's son is a USMA Cadet, and I'm even lower - won't be a USAFA Cadet until June.

A military cadet in the chain of command holds the rank of thrid Lt. That is why they are normally saluted

Tim | Tim, I agree with you about the Captain, but ask Nate how many times an enlisted saluted him. While he is a cadet(especially when they are beasts), he is the lowest of the low (even lower than dependents - just ask any upper classmen), but when they are sent during the summer into a regular unit, they are given the temporary promotion of third lieutenant, but when they get back to the Point, Anapolis, or Colorado Springs, they revert back to lowly cadets.

| Heh...I remember one time when was walking across the base and some cadet was approaching me. I nodded an acknowledgement to him, but didn't salute. He stopped me and demanded to know why I didn't salute an officer. I simply told him that he was NOT an officer until he received his commission, and until he wore those yellow bars, I was not required to salute him, then I walked off. |

| Well, unless things have changed, a cadet is never in the chain of command outside of a cadet chain of command. There is no such official rank as 3rd LT. A cadet is saluted when holding a postition for training purposes, under supervision of ca ommissioned officer, as a courtsey. A cadet has no legal authority which is why they can not be in the chain of command, they are merely an officer in training and the courtsey salute recognizes that and is the appropiate action to indicate respect for the office, i.e., acting Platoon Leader under supervision of the actual PL.
That said now moving on: thank you all who are and have served, especially those who have served where you drew hostile/hazardeous duty location pay.
Any military fencers in the Scott AFB area, please look me up in the TRANSCOM FP office.
