You are probably right. When my wife won the 1oz gold coin at a rally it was worth, maybe USD $300. Today I'm thinking it's in the $800-$900. On the other hand one of the thoughts I've had is that one of her former employers made gold and silver plated jewelry which might not be cost prohibitive as it was plate. Something else to think in terms of. A one ounce fine (solid) silver dollar was USD $11. the last time I checked and that made a rather handsome medallion.

Will try to look up that rule about medals later when I'm home and have the manuals in front of me.

    That's a thought.

I'd definitely prefer a gold-plated silver dollar to most trophies.

Half way through the epee event the evening's MC commented that he would have to retract 25 years of bad mouthing epee as being dull.
You could launch a sloth from a catapult, too, but that wouldn't invalidate the observation that sloths are slow.

    women's foil, was ... slow.
Yeah. And towards the end I thought that I was going to hurl if I saw Ms. Verhave make a failed attack, step in and throw her off arm straight up in the air in order to avoid getting hit by a riposte again.

Gawd but foil's a silly weapon these days.

True enough but we aren't discussing the relative merits of sloths versus other critters. And while I've appreciated saber as a game anyone who's ever held a true saber and compared it to our fencing sport sabers has to realize that you couldn't do most of what saber sport fencers do with a real weapon. Then again I will readily acknowledge we're talking about a game and not a martial art. So my rejoinder is that saber sport fencing is almost completely divorced from saber the martial art. Whereas epee still approximates a martial art.

yeah, I was muttering about how boring it was while our guest was texting away. I know we've talked the subject to death. But this was supposedly highest level of fencing and it was just boring. All the off target hits, stop and resetting the fencers to on-guard really slows the play down. It's tolerable even useful for training in the salle but on stage?? And neither fencer had what I would regard as good form. The men's exposition was better in terms of action but neither could hold a candle to the bout between Hansen and Lichten.

Yeah, I recall being highly impressed by all of the deaths from toe injuries during the Napoleonic wars...
