| I need you opinion Because at the mo I'm a foilist, but all my coaches say that i slash when I'm not supposed to. Do you think that I should convert to Sabre which is a weapon where I will ba able to slash? I have always liked the sabre and have had some coaching already.
Do you think I should change to Sabre? |

| Not if that's your only reason. You should learn to control what you do.
If you think that you'll ENJOY sabre more, THAT would a an adequate reason. If you think that you'd be significantly better at sabre that MIGHT be a reasonable reason.
But the fact that some of the time you slash with a foil is not a good reason to switch to sabre.

| Honestly? No. If you're slashing in Foil, in my experience, you'll hit too hard in Sabre.
Learn to thrust. Find a wall. Set a target and hit it. Nice smooth extentions. Change distance. Repeat until your arm falls off. |

| Reminds me of a very painful experience I had with a rather tall, strong, left-handed fencer a couple of weeks ago (we were fencing foil). Still, slashes don't tend to mark too much and my right arm has healed nicely now... :-(
This guy was not too competant and was trying to emulate flicking (except he wasn't flicking, he was just slashing). Despite, several of us telling him to hit with the point he wouldn't listen....
If you want to fence foil, then follow everybodies advice, learn some point control. Flicking is great, but you need control first. Get a coach to teach you how to flick (when you have gained more point control) and don't try to teach yourself by beating the life out of short, right handed women....
Boo
(was actually a little "weary" of fencing other people the following night: first time in 10 years I have been put off fencing through fear of getting hurt...) |

| Do you prefer sabre to foil? Switch, quick like a bunny! Easier to channel an innate impulse ( "slashing" ) that to try to eradicate it altogether.
But there's more to sabre that just the actions of the blade. If you are looking for cool, deliberative, involved conversations with the blade, stick with foil. It has to be the whole gestalt of sabre that calls to you ( IMO ).
In the end, a very personal decision. |

What you really need is a place where you can slash away to your heart's content. Live in the "Romance" world and pretty much kick *** on the lesser beings in the 'hood. What you need is the "Society for Creative Anarchists" . There you really don't have all those pesky FIE rules. Just make them up as you go along. great thing is when your opponent "thinks he won" Just explain the color of you world to him/her and they will surely see tha YOU actually won.....

| I been on the Foil for six bloody years! A long time on one weapon I know. I'm not the sort of fencer who slashes peoples arms and whatnot, when I try and Parre I do it too hard, I think that i what the Coaches mean.
I will try Sabre if I likke it I may continue.

Wow, you have more than one coach? Do you think that I should convert to Sabre which is a weapon where I will ba able to slash? I have always liked the sabre and have had some coaching already.

No, just quit fencing. If you have been fencing for 6 years, have more than one coach and you are slashing in foil, you really suck or you don't practice drills. Small movements is key in foil. Slashing is a result or magnification of large arm movements. Large arm movements will result in you losing bouts against people who take advantage of your crappy form. |
