Reel Problem

I am relativly new here but we have a problem with one of our reels and I hear this is the place to come for help. Our club recently obtained some All Star International Reels, the metal cased red things. Sorry for the technical terms here. At any rate, one of our reels will intermittently cut out. If you pull on the long wire thingy, again with the technical terms here, that we plug into a few times it will fix the problem. I have heard a few ideas as to what it might be but I thought I should ask here for help. Thanks a bunch to anyone who posts a reply.

P.S. as for french vs. pistol, I like the French for epee and foil

It's sound like you have a contact problem inside the reel. If you have no one in the club that has work on reels don't open it. The allstar reel is not like a leon Paul or uhlmann reels. I had the honor of putting one back together after a guy in our division thought he knew more then me took 3 hours to clean up his mess. The contacts sound like it needs to be clean. You can send it back to the dealer or to me for repair. My cost is 25.00 pius parts if any and S&H. You can contact me at

If it is a new AllStar, then it is very similar to the Uhlmann, but that doesn't mean it is easy. As Tim said, you should have someone experienced work on it. Where are you located? There may be someone qualified in your area. You can contact me at DHCJr@juno.com.

Again, don't open it yourself.

I should have said newest AllStar. They are still selling some of the older style, but they have started making it using the Uhlmann parts. But your original response is still true no matter which it is, don't do it yourself unless they have experience.

Sorry about the misstatement.

I'll add for wirewoodpride that once you've been shown how to do it, routine cleaning of the contact post on pre-Mercotac Allstar reels with (plasitc-safe) spray contact cleaner is fairly simple. The factory stickers in the Allstar reels I have recommend monthly cleaning and lubrication, so it's a good idea to learn how to do it. In practice you can go longer than one month, but I have found that they need to be cleaned more frequently than upright brush-and-commutator reels like the Leon Pauls and old-style Uhlmanns. Dust and dirt tends to collect down where the contacts are.
