It might be, but I figured I'd check. Also, I assume there's some variance, so even if there are N strips fully available and N pools, the amount of time it takes should grow somewhat with N. Does anybody have a handle on the difference in time between running 20 epee pools of 7 and 1 epee pool of 7, assuming there are 20 strips available for the former? That's about right--the planning spreadsheet we use calls it 150 minutes.
The number of pools doesn't make a huge difference at national tournaments. There's a little more time just getting all the referees to come pick up their pool sheets, but that's usually not enough time to make a noticeable difference to the end of the round.
Some referees, though, are significantly faster than others (even assuming no equipment failures or injuries or too many bouts going to time), so if that event with only one pool got one of the speedier refs, it could be 15 or 20 minutes less. You'd still have some pools finishing quickly in the big event, too, but the DEs still have to wait for the slowest pool to finish, of course, so it doesn't really help except to allow double-stripping of the slower pools.

Array Let me throw a spanner into the spokes. Would'nt wheelchair teams be cool? I know there aren't many of us, but if we knew there were more events more might come/start fencing Score 3 strokes, 4 seizures and 2 brain surgeries
I've had brain surgery, what's your excuse? -

no matter what was on the schedule, someone would pitch a fit. is it a perfect schedule? I guess not if people are grousing.. people were complaining loudly about Miami/San Jose/Dallas. OK, the schedule doesn't work for you.. Why then instead of criticizing AFTER the fact, did you not contact those that spent the time on the schedule and convey your concern's PRIOR to their working on the current schedule?
someone is always going to be "put out" upset" "not happy" blah blah blah..
Mark gave you the Rope, er I mean info, now come up with what you think is a better alternative.
I get so fed up with the whining and crying on the sidelines AFTER THE FACT.. People are NEVER happy and will ALWAYS have something to complain about. It would never be perfect for ANYONE of US and really, stop whining.. Bottom Line is, if you don't like it, don't go! your attitude won't be missed.. Since YOU (collectively) didn't step up to take that particular job that helped create the schedule, stop bashing those that did. They are trying to make it better but change takes time. I'd like to see you (collectively) work the HOURS and HOURS at the BC table, or the HOURS and HOURS of thankless, griped at, verbally abused, under paid-not paid Referee's.. Really, if you're a veteran(collectively), don't you think it's time to grow up and stop pointing fingers and blaming others when you know it would never be to your liking?

I would recommend you look again at the schedule, then repost your retraction. It is not as you say. I went to the US Fencing web site and that it not what is on the schedule on that site. Day 2 is Div.1 ME and I think it was Day 5 ME Senior Team.
I'm late on this, but it WAS as I said. It was changed, right after it was brought to the office's attention. Because it was ridiculous. "Preparation is the soul of tactics. And tactics are the soul of fencing."-Aladar Kogler -

Array Same here. I would have had to fly out, fence D1ME, fly back to NYC, take some exams early, and then fly back to Atlanta. This way I just have to miss a few classes. Me happy. "Preparation is the soul of tactics. And tactics are the soul of fencing."-Aladar Kogler Similar Threads -
