I wanted to post it as a .pdf file, but don't have the program to make them (just Acrobat Reader).

Fencing Angel - good point. Already turned it in, though. I don't think he'll take off for it (hopefully).

civiltech - Actually, no. I use America as an example a few times, but that's only because I had to cite the Declaration of Independence. I tried to stick to just "the State" in general, not any specific one. Unfortunately, the entire paper is weakened by having to cite seven specific sources (nice alliteration there, huh?). When you have to cram things in where they don't necessarily fit, it ain't always pretty.

Note to anybody who reads the paper: This paper sucks. It is not by any means near what I wanted it to be, and I know I contradict myself on at least a few points within it. The problem is that my actual position is too circumstantial to be able to put into words effectively. Because of this I tried taking a more simplified position, but kept grafting in my true beliefs. They're not always compatible.

Heh, well, as they were all men, and presuming no birth defects or later injuries, I'd say they DID...

But apart from the pun, there is also a point to be found: being an officer tends to make one more, not less, likely to be punished for disobeying immoral orders, as Nuremburg attests. And the higher-ranking the officer, the more responsibility attributed to him and the higher the standards of conduct.

The lower ranks may be shot for desertion or cowardice, but generally speaking they are not held to account for "war crimes"------their commanders are.

True, very true. All the more reason for me to be a good and moral commander.
