Budapest Videos (Discussion) hey guys, as some of you are already aware i have finished uploading all 31 bouts that were recorded this weekend to youtube. thanks to jeff spear for filming at least 5 of the bouts, and mike etropolski and ben igoe for filming 1 each
some very interesting things happened this weekend: for one thing gu bon gil from korea got second taking out reshetnikov, lopez, occhiuzzi, and zalomir in the process. while it is true that he was junior world champion in '08 this was only his second senior world cup so this was quite an accomplishment. rares dumitrescu won for the second year in a row and gelu florin zalomir finished 3rd for the second year in a row. the highest finishing hungarian was nikolasz iliasz who also got 3rd in his best performance ever
good bouts to watch (in no particular order):
occhiuzzi zhong
occhiuzzi gu
morehouse iliasz
kovalev buikevich
pastore wilain
huebner pillet
AND OF COURSE:
montano and williams
there were a lot of upsets and a lot of weird things that happened in this tournament as well as plenty of comebacks. of course i did not get as lucky as i usually get when it comes to catching things like that so i apologize and will try to be luckier next time
lets try to get a discussion going for some of the videos. go on, snap to it!

Array When Gu fenced Occhiuzzi it seemed like he didn't have much of an arsenal on defense. A few false searches, sometimes goes for parry riposte, but a lot of just counterattack/close out w/o much success. His attack was nice, and generally had a delayed, but long finish. -

His attack was nice, and generally had a delayed, but long finish. that slow attack ending with a long lunge with an added remise (which i refer to as a sliding lunge) is something that all the koreans i have seen use very well. and although his defense is simple his timing for these things seems to be excellent. i would love to see the korean coach give lessons -
His defense in very simple.. countering the attack and give a good finish on it..that's cool! -

Array Not a comment on the videos per se, but when I get to the videos through the link on this thread they play jerkily and motions blur, as though the camera speed wasn't right. When I get to them from the link on the other thread, they play fine...
Man, that was a heartbreaker ending to Tim's bout. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array Montano-Williams: It's a poor angle to see the calls, and looked like a really strange bout. Any first-hand comments? The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated. -Oscar Wilde -

Array By the way, to those of you that are trying out YouTube via HTML5 (you have to enable it at this link), it just added a slow motion/fast forward option. It's a pop-up menu off the play button.
Do your part; help get rid of Flash. -

Do your part; help get rid of Flash. Thats a really nice feature, but is it possible to view the videos in High Quality when you enable this feature? I only see 360p. -

Any first-hand comments? i thought that montano was getting a few calls actually. i think there were at least two that he did not deserve, one in the middle and one on defense. james was having a little trouble controlling montano in the beginning but he was getting touches anyway. then towards the end of the bout james seemed to have a really good idea of what to do. one actions james had a really nice body/blade fake to pull montano short in the first zone and later when james fell short he had a great immediate remise. lots of stuff like that. i thought james fenced montano about as well as he could have. usually when i see montano losing to someone it is because he started out not trying and dug himself a hole or just got a lot of unlucky misses or close-outs or whatever. it looked like james beat him quite soundly... -

Array I wasn't trying to suggest that he didn't, sorry.
It just looked like there was a bunch of stuff neither fencer was happy about. I've seen enough of this sport to know there's nothing suspicious about an Italian being upset when he's losing I guess the real thing that was odd was the number of 1-lights. Array I just watched the Ochiuzzi Zhong bout. I was impressed by Ochiuzzi's attacks. He had some pretty crazy preparations going on with his hand there but he kept the distance so perfectly that it didn't matter. Once he was up he started to get a bit lazy, particularly in the middle, and didn't use his feet enough so he got caught. Very good bout. -
Do the Koreans like to false start much? I seem to remember in many junior / cadet finals from years past - that everytime some Korean fencer fences, they almost always seem to start early (with the exception being Oh)..
On the other hand, what's wrong with Lopez lately? He doesn't seem to be using his usual defensive actions as much anymore.. -

On the other hand, what's wrong with Lopez lately? He doesn't seem to be using his usual defensive actions as much anymore.. im back from moscow and you will find plenty of korean false-starting (with the exception being oh) and that lopez has been using his usual defensive repertoire. i have video of him beating two olympic champions, among other things. gu had an amazing comeback against tarantino, and nemcsik fencing much better than he has in a long time. i will bring you all of this and more in the next few days. i will also want new ideas for an analysis video. now that i have a lot more footage i was thinking of doing another... send me your suggestions otherwise i will have to come up with something on my own and you guyz will just have to like it! -
Hungarians defensive repertoire? Mainly the younger guys like Szilagyi and Illiasz. -
