It's sad, isn't it? Sometimes I long for the golden days when I'd have custom kernels compiling all night long on the old 486 and spending days resolving source package dependencies just to get the sound card working. Or installing slackware on a laptop. The Horror.
When I installed Ubuntu on my current laptop absolutely everything worked out of the box. Probably the third simplest OS install ever, right behind OS X and BeOS. Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

Gah! What we really need is for some crusty BSD evangelist to jump in and make it really fun! Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

Seriously, I've delivered software on DOS, most Unix variants (including embedded versions with QT/E and other GDIs/GUIs), EPOC/Symbian, Mac, OS/2, every version of Windows, Java, and even written some software in Postscript to talk to a printer for fun. They're tools. Use the one that works for whatever you're doing. If you're spending more time futzing with the tool than accomplishing the task, then you're doing it wrong. -

Array I know it's "so yesterday", but: Apple Launches Text-sharing Device, the CoTex
Absorbs Heavy Flow of Data, Says Jobs
CUPERTINO (The Borowitz Report) - In the same week that it launched its much-touted iPad, Apple introduced its latest game-changer to the tech marketplace, a text-sharing device called the CoTex.
"There are a lot of texting devices out there that can absorb data," said Apple founder Steve Jobs. "But nothing absorbs more than a CoTex."
Mr. Jobs said that when used in conjunction with Apple's just-released mobile device, the AllWays StayFree, "the CoTex has what it takes to handle a heavy flow of information."
When asked about the flurry of new products that Apple has released at the end of January, Mr. Jobs mused, "I guess it's that time of the month."
Elsewhere, a new poll shows that 90 percent of Republicans who did not hear President Obama's State of the Union address disagreed with it.

Some might say that if you're spending more time futzing than being productive that you're doing it for fun ;D
I'm way less of a Linux fanboi than I used to be*, but I still think that one of the nice things about the whole Ubuntu project is that they're attempting to target a more general-user audience to deliver a product that requires much less futzing and meets the actual needs of a huge segment of desktop-class users that MS** does not actually address well even though the popular perception is that it does.
You're right though, OS evangelism (worse yet, distro evangelism) is silly***.

Array Wow, apparently the iPad really CAN do everything! Including whack 4% off the value of Apple's stock... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

I don't know whether the iPad will do as well as the iPhone or AppleTV, but I think it's a bit early to decide. Even if it is a flop, Apple doesn't sell things at a loss, and their financials won't be hurt. Their iPhone/iPod/Mac lines are all still making a ton of money, and growing.
