Array Why do want to learn how to fence? The most common answer from my college students, "I thought it might be interesting to try." Of course I always like the answer is, "I wasn't sure what it was, but it sounded interesting."
If this keeps I will be going back to the bottle. -

Yup. Little did I know it was addictive... -
I thought it looked like a lot of fun...and it is! People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones; neither should they nail up pictures. -

Array In my case I suspect it is genetic. Wanted to do it for as long as I can remember. Probably a "survival of the earlier predatory instinct", as Veblen would call it... -

Array I had to sit and watch my kid fence for hours, and I'm lousy as a sports mom. -

Array I watched my son fence for a couple of years like Peach, but the coach apparently took offense when I fell asleep in the bleachers and would regularly send the kids over to wake me up. -

Array I didn't like 'wasting my time' at tournaments. Being a fencing Dad is much more fun when I am actually fencing.

Array I was one of the "sounded like fun/interesting" types. Also, I always wanted to try it. I can't trace it to a specific event.
It sounds like you're disappointed in the reasons for beginning that your classes have given, but I say it doesn't matter what gets them there as long as you get them. I know I get people who when I mention that I fence talk about Star Wars, or some other move with fencing that they've seen--lately they mention the new Bond film too, which, having seen it, has terrible fencing. I tell them it's not necessarily like that, but mention that it's a blast anyway. Some people come expecting something more flamboyant, and I guess some leave when they don't get it, but often, as was partially the case with me, they stick around anyway.
