Painted Jacket Sleeves - Okay for NAC?

I've been trying to dig around these forums for information on this, and I've mostly found that regarding local and divisional tournaments in the US and most international tournaments, the rules specify that as long as the torso is a white color, any other non-advertising decorations are okay.

I was wondering if anybody had any conclusive information about the expansion of this policy to NACs.

Just fyi, I was thinking about having my jacket arms painted with Yakuza-tattoo style designs on the sleeves.

On a related note, what about having painted lamés? Do these it the regulations. I once fenced a kid in Albuquerque that had a landscape painted on his lamé, from what I remember.

    Anyway, thanks a bunch!

From the latest USFA Athlete's Handbook: (emphasis mine)

Fencers must wear the required clothing — regulation fencing jacket and pants, underarm protector (plastron),
knee socks and a fencing glove that covers half the forearm. Women must wear breast protector. Chest protection
is allowed for men. In epée and foil, a full jacket is required (i.e., a jacket with croissard/groin strap). In foil, the
lamé must have a croissard/groin strap. Any attachment to a weapon‘s handle (i.e. wrist strap orthopedic grip)
must fix the hand in one position such that the top of the thumb is no more than 2 cm. from the inner surface of the
guard. Warm-up pants are not allowed. Fencing uniforms must not have any rips, tears, holes, etc. for Division 1
competitions. U.S. Fencing allows uniforms of a single color apart from black or designs on the rear (unarmed) arm
and for Division I the leg. As the purpose of uniform color or design is for audience interest, such designs should
be in good taste. Graphic designs on the mask or uniform must be approved by the FOC in advance of USFA
competitions. Submit such designs at least 6 weeks prior to use in a competition.
Sewn-on designs must be on the
    rear arm/leg or back.
Note: At USFA local, divisional, and sectional competitions, there are no restrictions on colors or decorations on uniforms, providing that
the uniforms still comply with all other requirements.”
USFA Note: Masks may feature colored designs on condition that they are approved on the sole and absolute discretion of the Head
Referee, and is unacceptable at that event.”
Been There. Done That. Too Bad.

If you can wait a month or two, I think Absolute is coming out with a new Ed Hardy line in the spring. No word yet on whether or not the uniforms will be FIE.

Perfect reply rockstar! Exactly the information I wanted to know!

Having it painted on the back arm wouldn't be too bad. I suppose I'm a fan of asymmetry from time to time. It's just a matter of whether or not I want to take chances and have to argue with an FOC member as to if they think it could be a distraction in the middle of a tourney. Seems like a risk, huh?

And chinbeard, thanks for the suggestions, but I'm not really a fan of Ed Hardy. I was thinking of going for a more oriental look, and besides, name-brand designs are so dime-a-dozen. I'm already afraid this idea might be too toolish.

    Thanks for your replies!

Yeah, oriental tattoos aren't toolish at all.

No, no, no, don't thank me; I was just interpreting chinbread's post in a different expression.

If I take you to say this disingenuously, which I suppose is correct, all I meant by saying, "I already think this idea my be toolish" was to say that the idea for having any tattoo design scheme at all could be seen as toolish. Didn't mean to offend, if offense was perceived, was merely criticizing my own idea.

I really do think they're quite artistic though, almost like a japanese tapestry printed on skin. Just an opinion.

I like the idea. Anything that personalizes and makes it more fun and interesting is a good thing in my book. I also agree that the tats can be striking in their artistry.

If you find yourself competing in something that requires an all white jacket, buy a second one and keep it white. If the jacket doesn't have to be FIE, the Cen2 jackets are cheap enough to own several.

    I say go for it.

Are you going to sew on a foxtail to your knickers and have rhinestones on your glove as well? Because that would complete the look.

Is that what they're teaching you in the navy? You're quite the rebel, but I think that's more your look. I'll stick with women, thanks.

Gosh, Rebel! Don't you know anything about making fencing uniforms look cool? How dare you make such an absurd suggestion!

You're right, I should stop cheating on my wife with all those men! I apologize that you asked a forum how to look like a douchebag and got made fun of.. let me try this again: "Gee man! You're so edgy and creative! Don't listen to anything these lame people might say, they're just jealous!"
