Question about a certain piece of Italian Fencing Attire.. Tarantino, Baldini, Vezzali, Montano, all of them wear this white and blue patch on their whites. It appears to be of two figures sitting back to back, and I've always wondered what it stands for. Its probably something famous and obvious that I'm just not cool enough to know of, but please enlighten me!
Thanks! -

Array I always thought it looked like those trashy truck driver mudflaps. It has quite a different connotation in Europe, I'm told! -

Thanks guys! That's what I thought, until I discovered that the one on the left is a guy. Have: Leon Paul Blades Size 9.5 used, good condition, 2 RH L Uhlmann Visconti, 1 RH M Uhlmann Visconti, 1 RH M Uhlmann clone Visconti

Array So what's the deal with the patch? I checked out Kappa's website and it doesn't look like they make fencing clothing, do they just sponsor the Italian team or something? -

I checked out M-B's website and it doesn't look like they make fencing cars, do they just sponsor the German team or something?
And don't get me started on trying to find a car like Jimmy Johnson's at Lowe's.... Closest I could find was a riding lawnmower, and there's no way I could get it up to 200 mph, no matter how hard I tried in the parking lot.

(You need to remove the rev-limiter, and use a higher quality of gas...) -

-B I'm guessing what with Tim Morehouse's begging for dollars and the USFA's budget problems, corporate sponsorship seems kind of like a foreign (excuse the pun) concept to most US fencers. -

Array It isn't a foreign concept. As part of the Canadian National team my former coach had a whole binder on how to get corporate sponsorship.
What's different here is the popularity of different sports. If a basketball team (or soccer, or hockey) team and a fencing team both ask a company for sponsorship and they only can afford to sponsor one, which is more likely to get funding? Which is better advertisement? Which is more likely to have a personal connection to the person deciding?
I'm not saying it's impossible to get funding... it's a matter of going around to local businesses in your community. However, if you want significant private funding... such as a contract with Kappa or Mercedes, it's much tougher to secure that kind of commitment of funds. There's lots of top athletes in line, and each is deserving as the next. Again, companies make decisions based on what makes the most sense from an advertising perspective.

I associate with the bottom feeders who live on the local housing estates in my home town.
I'll be moving this to WC as it's not about fencing. -
