Array Is this really helping? I have been doing 100 lunges a day from my wheelchair for the last two weeks since I was given leave to drill and bout since my latest stroke in October.
I am not allowed to drive so I am seeking car pools or whatever to get me there. This weekend, barring an unforseen circumstance I get to fence.
I need another body across from me to really get the feel and distance. My wall is somewhat singular in its attacks. I have lost a lot of speed and can't get the explosiveness I once had. I am afraid of how I will do against an opponent. I am hoping the rote repetition will help, but my meds and where the last stroke occurred make me take the darkside view of things. You coaches out there, does home practice help? I could be doing it all wrong (form) and there is no one to correct me.
I am going to the camp in March (the very word camp implies things like smores and singing kum-by-yah)and NAC two weeks later. I guess I just want some validation.

I can't speak to training for wheelchair fencing at all, but I certainly have noticed the difference since I've stopped doing as many lunges in practice. In short, my lunge isn't all that great right now. Yes, home practice helps. Make sure you have someone look at you from time to time to see that you're doing the lunge correctly but otherwise don't develop a complex about it. Yeah, it takes a while to learn how to do it correctly but after that, there are other things to worry about.

Array 3 strokes, 4 seizures, and 2 brain surgeries and you're worrying about your lunges? I'm in awe that you're standing (or wheeling as case may be) anywhere, much less on a strip. Bravo and best luck this weekend. -
Pardon my ignorance, but what constitutes a lunge from a wheelchair? I'm a little confused buy this.
Also, 3 strokes, 4 seizures, and 2 brain surgeries; that's f***ing hardcore. You are f***king amazing. -

Array I should think it would help conciderably.
Strength. Coordination. Accuracy. Stamina. Sentiment De Fer.
Keeps your discipline up. Your mind in the game.
Perhaps drill in front of a mirror. Visualize stuff while drilling. The parry before the lunge or w/e.
I think you can trust yourself to assess your form. You've been fencing a while, and you've always struck me as a pretty sharp cookie.
I bet there's someone nearby that would come over to your place and train/ bout with you from time to time, if it's hard to get to the club as much as you'd like.
100 lunges a day every day for two weeks straight... yeah. kudos for that for sure. Often in error. Never in doubt. -

Array Thanks for the sanity check. I make myself go out and do the work. So from that standpoint the discipline is there. I am getting a little faster and I have been practicing visualization too. It makes me work. I just hate not being good and since I've had some success in the chair (I Hate to say it but better than on my feet) I don't want to lose it. Array GB have you tried contacting your former coach to ask about at-home drills that could prove helpful to you. I imagine you might also reach out to Jerry Benson - you met him in Atlanta a year ago - with the same question. Perhaps some of your fellow chair fencers might also have suggestions.
On another note, are you allowed any strength training? If so, perhaps some moderate lifting will help with strength over the haul of a tournament.
