The classification chart can be found in lots of places, including the USFA site and AskFRED. Here's a link to the one on FRED:

With only 8 people, regardless of their ratings, only the winner can earn a new classification(rating) and only an E.

For a tournament with the entry stats you just listed, the answer is: No, you cannot get a rating there.

That said, it still might just be a worthwhile experience unless you regularly get to bout with a varied group including C's and D's.

Well, he can if he's one of the Us, because if he wins he gets an E.

I think the point was that if you're new, the odds of you beating 2 Cs, 2Ds and an E are fairly low.

A low blow, but I would agree there is much greater potential for upsets in epee.

IDK about you guys, but I placed 30/50 in my first tournament... and a good chunk of the top 20 guys in the division were there. I got stuck in the hardest pool, too

Granted, that doesn't mean I got a rating. But if you get 8 people who aren't particularly good and a newbie who's rather good, then you can see some upsets

Differently in every country, and in general not at all like the US. Your letter here means nothing to them there.

i think nearly every other country in the world has a ranking rather than a rating.

e.g. You are ranked based in the UK on points earned at UK opens and internationals, which are weighted by the strength of the event.

In Australia it is similar to the FIE where there are set amounts of points to be one at each 4 national events, regardless of strength

Here is the rating system for one of close to 50 European countries, Sweden. Each country has its own system, and then there are some systems for top-level competitions.

Here is the current system in Sweden: http://www.fencing.se/poanglistor/

Look under "poänglistor" in the list to the left. The Swedish system works similar to the FIE or NPRS system, one gets points according to competition placement, level of competition, and size of field. The N best points results for a given year are added up for a total point sum, which is used for final ranking. The details vary with age group and weapon.

    Have a nice time!
