Calling all fencers-artists: Catania 2011 Mascot Design International Competition

In his presentation of the Candidature of the city of Catania for the 2011 Senior World Fencing Championships (see: 2011 Senior World Championships: What Giorgio Scarso told the FIE Congress), Giorgio Scarso, FIS President, announced that the Organizing Committee will run an international competition to design the mascot for the championships open to all fencers who are members of a national federation affiliated with the FIE. Catania was the winner and now there is the official announcement of this international competition on the FIS web site.

CATANIA: The Organizing Committee of the Senior World Championships "Catania 2011" is running an international mascot design competition for these championships. This "Competion of Ideas" for the Mascot is open to all fencers who are members of national federations affiliated with the FIE. Eligible candidates should submit their "Idea" between January 15 and May 31, 2010. The winning prize include an all expense paid trip to Catania and accommodation during the Championships, in addition to the cash prize.

This is a great initiative by the FIS and a wonderful opportunity for the many multi-talented fencers and artists who excel in both crafts.

Hey,

I read several posts about Paris 2010...

The competition to design the Mascot for Escrime 2010 makes me laugh a bit.

Catania, is running the same competition for the 2011 world championships: Catania Mascot 2011.

For each competition one has to design or create a Mascot for the fencing world championships.

Leaving aside the fact that the Italians are a bit ahead with the organization, what shocks me more is the difference between the two:

Paris:

• 2 tickets for the 2010 Fencing World Championships for the day of your choice in Paris at the Grand Palais
• a product from the 2010 fencing mascot

Catania:

- travel expenses to/from Catania and stay during the entire “Catania 2011” World Championships ;
- 10.000,00 Euros This amount can be exclusively used for sports/study purposes. The sum will be handed in to the winner only after F.I.S. – Comitato Regionale Sicilia has received ad hoc documents endorsed by the athlete’s Federation certifying the use of said sum for the purposes indicated in this Article.

So to summarize, Catania offers you airfare from your country of origin, hotel for the entire championships, and 10,000 euros.

Oh well, I'm happy anyway that Paris offers 2 tickets for the day of my choice.
