Events
This will be the first time that we will hold EIGHT events at the Hawaii Open. This is how they are shaping up:
YOUTH FOIL: 6 fencers registered, with maybe one or two more entries to come.
WOMENS FOIL: 4 fencers registered with 2 more likely to enter.. Should be an E1 event so we will be awarding a rating here!
WOMENS EPEE: 2 fencers registered with 2 more likely to enter so we will have the minimum here to run an event.
WOMENS SABRE: 3 fencers registered with 2 more likely to enter.
MIXED FOIL: 14 fencers registered with 3 more fencers likely to enter. Should be a C1 event.
MIXED EPEE: 13 fencers registered with 4 more fencers likely to enter. With 6 B's this should be a really strong B1 event.
MIXED SABRE: 9 fencers registered with 2 more fencers likely to enter.
VETERANS EPEE: 5 fencers registered with 3 more fencers likely to enter.
Weapons Control:
Dan DeChaine will be our guest armorer and running an equipment control for masks, bodycords and anthing with lame material on it. If you think your lame has some dead spots on it be sure to get a new one! Also check your mask for dents, holes in the fabric and that the rubber band that goes around the mask is secure (if you can peel it up tack it down with hot glue).
Uniform: A reminder that a full uniform is required. This means the cloth underarm protector, socks that cover your exposed legs and breast protection for the ladies need to be worn. Make sure you have this stuff along with 2 working weapons and 2 working bodycords to take to the strip. If your weapons are a little suspect make sure you have some extra to borrow.
Armory Clinic
Dan DeChaine would like to hold an armory clinic before the Hawaii Open. It is tentatively scheduled for Friday February 26 at the Palama Settlement.
If you are interested in attending please contact Michael Aiau aiau101@aim.com, (808) 371-9931 if you are interested. If you have some specific topics you would like covered please let me know. If you cannot make the clinic Dan will be around all weekend to answer questions and help out with problems you may have with your equipment.
Referees
We have secured two International referees for the event so far: Kelly Koehler Johnson of Germany returns as this year's Head Referee and making his first appearance in the islands will be Michael Ross of Corpus Christi Texas.
Just a reminder that registration for the Hawaii Open closes tomorrow. If you're still thinking about it let me know, we can always work something out as far as the pre-registration.
Also airfares to the islands are fairly reasonable right now. Delta is $365 round trip from L.A. and I understand that Hawaiian airlines has some good deals from the northern west coast cities like Portland and Seattle. Hotel occupancy is down so I'm sure there are good deals on hotel rooms as well.
