| Collegiate Club National Championships: Redux Earlier this year information was posted as to the Collegiate Club National Championships to be held on April 5-6, 2003 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.
At the time Brad Baker (current UMass-Amherst Head Coach) listed the following schools planning to participate:
Univ. of Florida
Univ. of Massachusetts
Univ. of New Hampshire
Univ. of South Carolina
Clemson Univ.
Northwestern (men only)
Univ. of Texas - Austin
Texas A&M Univ.
United States Military Academy
Other schools perhaps expressing interest included:
Georgia Southern University
Univ. of Maryland - Baltimore County.
If anyone can provide any pertinent updates here as to new schools participating and More I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Evan |

| Evan,
The University of Rochester might be interested. Has there been any talk as to what the format(s) will be (team, individual) and who is eligible to compete? (undergrads only, grads, any club member)

| Evan,
I know that Smith and Army are intending to attend, and I will make sure Brad hits this thread as well.

| Here's the list as given to me by Bruce Capin the organizer a few days ago.
FULL M and W:
Florida, Texas, Texas A&M, UMASS, New Hampshire, Va Tech, Army, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue
FULL M plus W squads TBA:
South Carolina, Wisconsin, Northwestern (no women)
SQUADS:
Baylor, Maryland, Georgia Southern, Wesleyan (GA: women only), Clemson
TBA: Smith College, Tulane
Despite Smith being listed as TBA they are definately interested in going so should be considered in the categories above (women only for what I trust is an obvious reason).
Darius- the format is in flux and is still changing. Competitors must be students, undergrad or grad are both eligible. There's been some discussion about whether full-time status should be required. Most likely the format will have each school with 18 fencers (9 of each gender) with 3 per weapon. The 3 fencers within a squad will be ranked as A, B, and C. A fencers fence A fencers, B vs. B, C vs. C. Total up the number of bouts won and you get the school's score at the end. Some number (TBD) of fencers will be advanced to an individual event based on thier results in the team portion. Non-student club members would NOT be eligible (it's a collegiate club championships, not a club championships).
Evan- The easiest way to get current info would've been to send me an email. The list you had was from a couple of months ago I'd guess.

| Not a problem Brad. My intention was not only to establish a list of representatives, but also to raise the profile of it somewhat.

| The final list of clubs attending is:
Florida Purdue Wesleyan College
Michigan Smith College Clemson
Texas New Hampshire Maryland
Virginia UMASS VA Tech
Wisconsin Army South Carolina
Northwestern Texas A & M Michigan State
18 schools total, 16 teams in each gender (Smith and Wesleyan (GA) are women only, Northwestern and someone else are men only).
Every school fences every other school. 18 fencers per school (3 per weapon), the top fencer in each weapon fences the top fencers from other schools, the B-strip the corresponding B-strips, the C-strips the C-strips, etc.
The team portion will probably be followed by an individual portion of a size TBD (6-9 fencers/weapon likely).
Will report on results next week.

| You're undoubtedly one of the schools that was listed as having both men and women. There are I believe 2 schools each that have no squads in a gender. Raises the question of how many partial teams there are, information which has not been sent out.

| Best of luck to the UMass Team this weekend, and fingers crossed for a strong, competative championship for everyone.
Big thank you to U. Florida for serving as host.

| How dare those silly fencers do something like travel back home before posting their results on the internet for all of us voyeurs? Really! You'd think they had classes to get to or something.
(Drums fingers impatiently. . . )
Very nice for your team, Tim! |

Tim | Well, I don't know where the complete results are (they actually haven't even finished tallying them). What I do know is as follows: On the men's side, UMass and Northwestern were co-champions. UMass was led by its A$$ KICKING Men's Foil Squad of Matt Franco (13-1), Leo Cook (13-1) and Pat Reardon (11-3). Obviously, they took gold. UMass Men's epee took Silver. Had the individual been held, UMass would have promoted 8 of their nine starters, I believe.
On the women's side, University of Florida took first overall team by two bouts over UMass. The UMass team was led by its equally kick-*** Women's epee squad of Jessica Yu, Karla Hubschwerlin, and Cathie Arcisz, who also took gold. (I will edit this post to contain their records as soon as I find out what they were). I believe UMass would have promoted 6 of their nine starters on the Women's side.
Not surprisingly given these results, UMass had the best record as a six weapon team.
Qatet: Smith WS took 1st. they dropped one bout on the weekend! (according to scott, that was due at least in part to overconfidence. )
Overall, a successful first year for this event, though I am still quite annoyed that the individual component was cancelled. Rest assured that next year at UNH will be run MUCH better and will have an individual component.
