    Faulty Ground

The other night, one of my working epees would not ground when I tested my guard with the other guy's tip. He said, wet the thrid prong and re-insert in the socket. Sure enough, it worked. His explanation is that there's rust in the socket, and the prong is not making good contact.

Is this likely so? What can be done other than wetting the thing with siliva (not very couth looking...)

It could also be that the tines of the body cord pin need to be spread to make a better contact. To deal with any corrosion in the socket plug (and corrosion that is sufficient to interfere with conductivity will often not be visible), sand it piece of emery paper rolled up so it will fit into the plug.

Something else to be aware of is that with some epee sockets the C-plug is electrically connected to the bracket and weapon only by a small tab which the plug tightens down on. If that tab gets shifted out of position just a little you'll lose the connection to the body cord C-line.
