| I've only just begun Hi all,
My Mom and I are interested in learning to Fence. Do a lot of people just up and decide to do this?
Can anyone recommend a good place for instruction in North New Jersey? Also, a good book that has history and tidbits, or a true fencing story?
Thanks. We can't wait to start! |

| If you search the net, I believe most states would have a fencing association with a list of member salle's where you could join. Can't help you being in Canada...sorry.
Whatever you do...after your initial training with foil...come to the dark side! Leave the epee for the birds....take up Sabre!!!

| Why the initial training in foil then? If you want them to start in sabre why give the foilists a chance to get them, encourage beginners to start with sabre.
Pandora- Yes, lots of people just up and decide to do this. If you go to http://www.usfencing.org and click on "Info for Members" and "Clubs and Divisions" and then click on either the map of New Jersey or the map of New York you'll find a listing of clubs in your area. I don't know how far from the city you are, but some of the best clubs in the country are in NYC. There are also several clubs in Northern NJ, and many of the high schools in your area have teams as well (okay, that doesn't work quite as well for your mom, but...). The USFA website is a good resource to start your search with.

| Where are you in Jersey?
In north Jersey the is Santelli in Englewood. They have long been the standard in NJ.
Further south there is Medeo in Livingston and Lilov in Montclair. These are all good clubs.
If you are more specific about your location (county maybe), I can be more specific about clubs.
And, yes, people do just "up and decide" to fence. My son and I did.

| If you're anywhere near it and are interested in traditional older styles of fencing, I would highly recommend the Martinez Academy: www.martinez-destreza.com
And Chris Umbs, who is a regular here and a student of Maestro Martinez, just opened his own school in New Jersey as well. They are both great teachers and fine people. |

| Santelli also has beginners programs, so its a very pleasant way to get started. You can go to their website at www.santelli.com (which is mostly for their equipment), and then click on "Club" at the top right. Good luck, and enjoy!
