    Twilight

Am i the only one who wants to punch stupid twilight fans in the face. New moon was 2 hours of a girl sitting and crying. Edward and Jacob are both ugly and Bella is a whiny brat. Any thoughts?

It was obvious that it was going to be stupid. You all went and saw it anyway.

The movie did at least spawn an interesting Pandagon article: The Pornography of Non-Rejection

And let’s face it---you can’t really convey the message “you’re unrejectable” by having a woman be sexually available and find takers. That doesn’t actually mean, as women know, that you’ll go unrejected. The escape hatch for this trap in your fantasy world is having no sexual agency of your own. In many romance novels, the sex is based around coercion, if not outright rape. In “Twilight”, there just isn’t sex.

But it's interesting that Amanda Marcotte discusses "Twilight" as not containing coercive sex, because although that may be true of the first book/movie, I hear that there are some really disturbing coercive sexual encounters later in the series -- basically that the vampire dude has sex with the girl in some manner that hurts her to the point of causing unconsciousness, at which point he apparently knowingly just continues right along, and it's not discussed in the book as an item of concern that he treats her that way. WTF?

Which segues into the point that Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon and it's being argued by people who've read the books (I haven't) that "Twilight" is essentially a Mormon propaganda vehicle (especially taking into account the later books in the series). A few of the talking points for that which I've heard include 1) the way in which the presence of a male is a sine qua non for the female character especially later in the series -- apparently the vampire dude disappears for a while, during which time her life's treated as not worth discussing; 2) the overwhelming emphasis on abstinence outside of heterosexual marriage; and 3) the coercive nature of the sexual encounter(s).

On a slightly related note, since Stephanie Meyer is a good Mormon, she donates her required tithe (10% church tax, basically) to the LDS, which poured the majority of the funding into California for the campaign in support of Proposition Hate -- excuse me, Proposition 8. I believe most "Twilight" enthusiasts would be horrified to consider that their financial support of the franchise was being used to fund a campaign to prevent people from being able to legally marry their partners, but it's just off the radar screen for most folks that this backroom political stuff is going on.

Why did you throw-away your money to go see the film? That is the first thing I am trying to understand. I wouldn't waste my time, much less my money on something I knew from the trailers was going to be insipid.

I got about halfway through your post and was just going to tell you to be quiet because girls are, in general, stupid. Then I finished the rest and i realize maybe i'm actually helplessly in love with you... so.... think i could sneak into our room and watch you sleep for a few hours? Wouldn't that be romantic?
Everyone relax cause I got it....

Oh, I love love love the Twilight series.

I love them despite the fact that they're badly written, totally lacking in dramatic tension, and I wanted to chase that little twit Bella Swann out of my gender at the tip of my sabre. I ended up buying the first three books largely because I kept seeing them in the bookstore and the cover design was pretty. Then I only ended up reading the first half of the first book before I got bored and stuck them all on a bookshelf, never to be revisited.

Then the whole Twilight mania ESPLODED, with a loud 'splodiness.

So some time passes, and there I was going through my bookshelves and deciding which ones I wasn't going to re-read, and could hock on Amazon Marketplace or eBay. I decided it was time to sell Twilight, New Moon, and...um, whatever the third title was so I could give bookshelf real estate to something I actually liked.

Then it turned out that I had three first editions, and the last two were first editions, first printings.

So I took pictures of the copyright pages and slapped the whole lot up on eBay.

And then... CHA-CHING!!! Suffice to say I made almost enough to cover a month of classes, private lessons, and floor fees at my club.

So yes, I loves me some Twilight. I wish all the kinda dorky and disappointing genre novels Mr. Sabreuse and I have lying around would appreciate like that.

Kristen Stewart is like the physical incarnation of what I believed the princess to be like in Zelda II - (than, because somehow the entire world responds to my thoughts, they actually came out with a new Zelda game called "Twilight Princess")

anyways - Twilight fanatics are just like Trekkies - except the vortex of escapism is powered by romance and aesthetics rather than science fiction and adolescent adventurism - whilst I'm not necessarily defending either I do realize that the reality we have built around ourselves makes escape of any kind infinitely preferable no matter how juvenile or insipid the gateways.

    also,

Kristen Stewart is super super super super super fine.

Twilight has eaten my girlfriend's soul. It's pretty much all she spends her spare time doing, reading Twilight and Twilight fanfiction. Screw Twilight. The other day I had work to do and was trying to prepare dinner at the same time (smoked pork chops slow cooked with sauerkraut, YUM!) I asked her to please go get some carrots, which seemed reasonable, as she had several prescriptions to pick up right across the street, and because I was cooking, and I'd done all the dishes. "I'll go when I finish this chapter," she says. Six hours later, NO FREAKING CARROTS! Rewind a couple of months. She wants to come see what these fencing tournament things are all about. She brings a netbook and spend most of the time with her nose buried in fanfics. My DE is up, I let her know that if she wanted to see fencing, the DE was going to be the most exciting, but I wouldn't be offended if she stayed in the lobby and read/played with the cats wandering around outside the club. I'm fencing an B. (I was a D at the time) I'm psyched because I've managed to beat him every time I've fenced him in pool bouts in the passed. I get the first touch. I turn my head and yell. My girlfriend sitting next to the strip right in front of me. Her face buried in the netbook, with headphones on. She doesn't even look up. I get the second touch, I turn and yell again, I'm getting pumped up. And my girlfriend is there again reading Twilight fanfic to deflate me. Now, I don't mind if she doesn't understand fencing. I don't mind if she doesn't like fencing. I don't care if she doesn't cheer. But come on, is it too much to expect you to be in the other room if you don't want to watch instead of sitting right in front of me demonstrating that lurid Twilight fanfiction is more enthralling than your boyfriend in a bout he is clearly getting pumped up for? She didn't look up until I'd blown my lead and was losing 11-7 after being deflated from looking up and being ignored for 18 straight touches. I'm never taking her to another fencing tournament. And I hate Twilight with a fiery burning passion.
