GREENVILLE, S.C., November 10, 2002 – Sophomore Ian Schlaepfer (Rohnert Park, Calif.) posted the best results of the three Nittany Lion fencers competing in the North American Cup Junior/Cadet Open this weekend, as he claimed a ninth place finish in the men’s foil. Freshman Chris Miller (Salina, Kan.) registered a 26th place finish in the men’s foil, while classmate Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) logged a 25th place performance in the men’s saber.
The event, which was held at the Palmetto Expo Center and organized by the United States Fencing Association, is one of a series of such tournaments that allow competitors to earn points based on their finishes. These point accumulations are then used to select U.S. National Teams.
Schlaepfer is heading into his second season as a pivotal member of the Penn State fencing squad after a superb freshman campaign. He completed the season with a 35-3 dual meet record and finished eighth at the national championships to earn All-American honors. Throughout his career, Schlaepfer has accumulated four bronze medals from USFA national events.
Highly-regarded Penn State head coach Emmanuil Kaidanov felt his three young fencers could have performed better at the tournament. “Are we happy?” said Kaidanov. “Not really, but we have to start somewhere.”
These three fencers and the rest of the Nittany Lions will return to action this weekend, as they play host to the Garret Penn State Open on Saturday and Sunday, with action set to begin at 8:30 a.m. each day.
