Athletes from around the world are in Austin this weekend to compete in the Wheelchair Fencing World Cup.
Earlier this week, the Pan-Pacific Championships narrowed down the finalists.
Friday the best fencers from America, Europe, and Asia competed.
Competitor Gary van der Wege says this is the first time the World Cup has been held outside of Europe.
Wege, who is from San Marcos, is also the organizer of the event.
"It was one of those things nobody else was going to do, so in order to get it done I went ahead and jumped in and said we can do it in Austin. We've had a lot of big fencing competitions in Austin before, so why not make wheelchair one of them," van der Wege said.
Competitors from the 12 countries represented are gaining points toward the Athens Paralympic Games in 2004.
